i really like True track Lock-rites they are cheap and Strong as heck i know a kid that runs one in his 88 4runner with 36X12's on it been in for a couple years and u cant even tell by the wear... plus if u keep light throttle u can do tighter turns and u hear this really nice CLICK CLICK CLICK... LOL!

good ol' lncoln........... er should i say miller locker :waytogo:

been welded in for 2 years now and no issues........ as for rain...... i love it whenever it does rain since it provides some great fun. you gotta learn how to drive it in the rain if you dont know the slip limits but overall i still drive it like i stole it in the rain. just watch the transition ramps on freeways and you'll be just fine.

your 22r couldnt put out enough hp to break a properly welded lincoln locker, the key is clean it well and make sure your heat is up high.:waytogo:

The onlt lincoln locker ive seen beak was on a taco 5lug prerunner with 33's and the guy was doing donuts going from dirt to asphault, in that case any locker would probly break.:looney:

i heard you cant keep the arc on for more than 5 seconds at a time or else you warp it? is this true, thats what kinda made me steer clear the welding option.

I have had a welded rear end in my '79 for over a year of daily driving on pavement with 33s and then a few months back I switched out to 34s. I have had no problems. This is on my 4x4 so it's the six lug rear end, but from what I have heard it seems to be working fine for the 5 lug rear ends too. Here is an old thread where I described how I welded mine.

    http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2695

I have to say I did a hell of a lot more weld then I saw the guy on extreme 4x4 do. He just welded the gears to eachother. I welded the spider gears to the side gears and then I welded the gears to the carrier. The cast steel welded fine. I wonder how others are doing this? It appears that the guy on extreme 4x4 was only doing a single pass in four places where the gear teeth meet. I did 3 pass welds in this location as well as from the gears to the carrier. I don't know if this means I totally violated the five second thing or what, but it seems to be holding up just fine. I did spread the welds out alternating from one side to the other, and the longest weld was only 1.5" so i wasn't too much over the 5 second thing (I was usingt pretty big wire and 1.5" went pretty fast). I would definitely say go for the lincoln locked option over any of the other methods mentioned in this thread, especially since you said you don't have a lot of dough for the project. ANother cool aspect of using this method is that you don't have to re-shim the ring and pinion which is another big money saver.:waytogo:

thanks for the info shadetree, and yea i was gonna cut a fat steel plate and place it over the pinion gears in the carrier and weldem all together, i have a welder hear at my house and a spare rear end, also yea re shiming and replacing that crush ring and preloading the bearings checking the mesh pattern, it was making me skeptical again, lol!
