just wondering if anyone can tell me the main or major problems people have had with these motors i plan on getting a 86 4x4 with a 22rte so i just wanna have a little info on the motor problems
Nothing wrong with them. The stock turbos are really inferior. You could find a cheap CT26 to put in there or some T3/T4 turbo that'd be more efficient and cheap. Add an intercooler. 22RE with more oomph
You made some Good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with Toyota Hilux, Pickup, and Stout Owner's Forum | ToyotaMinis.com regards
Only problem would be neglect from PO. High mileage motors would have questionable turbo condition. Excellent excuse for a t3/t4 upgrade along with exhaust upgrade.
Seen a few complaints about cracking Oem turbo manifolds and turbos getting worn out but al the more reason to go bigger and better a inter cooler is a must and I'd ad a decent high quality large capacity radiator and oil cooler if u plan on raising the boost up a bit
Basically upgrade everything on the turbo end, oil cooler and lines, add a front mount, the turbo itself, turbo manifold, downpipe and exhaust system, radiator. Just find a cheap truck with a good body and swap a 1uz. Weights close to same as the 22ret with more than double the HP and torque, and not to mention better gas mileage.
exhaust manifold on higher mileage motors are usually always cracked and the can blow out the back of the head gasket on occasion. and you should try to let your stock turbo cool down as much as possible before shutting off the truck and run synthetic oil (helps keep the turbo health and reduces the heat the forged pistons deal with)
I've looked online and most guys would just do that. Add a few supporting mods and they've got themselves a healthy 200rwhp truck and even more. I've seen people weld the cracked manifolds and that still is fine. I'd intercool it in some form. Oil cooler, give that a try too. you can do a lot with a 22RTE. I wanted to turbo my 22RE for a little while just to have something to **** with. okay, it's a 4X4 he's looking at. intercooling would be easy, you got more space. I'd also switch to electric fans. and then I would add another fan to the intercooler. Wouldn't hurt to cool it constantly at lower speeds so you don't heatsoak the intake charge.
