Well, I've read a bunch of threads about this and I tried almost everything and yet my '93 Yota 22RE still pings. I bought a new TPS sensor and read the manual on the adjustment, used highest octane fuel (91 here in Cali), new genuine Toyota plugs and wires, checked the timing, bought a new distributor (non related problem), injected Sea Foam into the combustion chamber (to remove possible deposits in the combustion chamber), replaced fuel filter (I had to pay for this cuz I was too lazy). I tried different additives to possibly clean the injectors and even did the injector service at a shop (a total rip off). I also replaced the thermostat with a brand new genuine Toyota one cuz I thought the temperature was a little high and caused pinging. I had to set the timing to 2.5 degrees or less to get the pinging to a much tolerable amount but it affects fuel economy and hp a little bit. The spark plugs looked okay after all of this, not rich or leaned out at all and I even tried gapping it lesser with same results. And it has the weirdest thing everytime I start it up after it cooled down for a while. After starting when cold, it would bog between 2200 and 2800 rpm ONCE when you floor it (during accelaration). And then after that, it runs normal .. Any ideas? Maybe a bad TPS sensor or I adjusted it wrong, dirty injectors? The bogging, maybe the coldstart injector perhaps? I decided to just keep this engine. It is the original engine and very reliable with 150K on the ticker. Just has these annoying hick ups. One guy one Pirate4x4 said he installed a header on his 22RE and it went away and wouldn't even ping with an 87 octane . But wouldn't it lean it out if I had a header? I really want to get this resolved before I get a TRD header and a cam from LC or Engine builder (268 cam). Just wanted a little punch. Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas.
bogging My truck bogs down around that rpm too. My O2 sensor on the exhaust is not even connected right now. Maybe that's why. I suggest getting the header anyways. Or even better go turbo!
Have you had the fuel pressure checked on it yet?? When me & my friend installed my motor we found that after we got it running that it had a bad injector!! Jay...my friend checked the fuel pressure & found out what injector was not running at 100% & we replaced it. Truck runs great & havent had any more problems with it pinging/spark-knocking or running like **** as I call it.
You know what, my spark plugs tell me that none of the cylinders are leaning out. But I will give them a try. I will get a set of new injectors rather than getting them cleaned. Thanks for the info..
