im looking to go turbo after i build my hybrid..
trying to get back my early 22r head from a friend.. thinking if the heads used on pop up motors (the domed pistons) were dropped onto a lazer block, the compression would go lower?? i know its not a bolt on thing, so i know ill need an adjustable gear for the cam.. how much will the compression drop if i use this setup?? and how reliable would a lazer EFI intake be if under boost?? i know 22ret's can take 20+ psi of boost, but how reliable is it and how prone to damage are they under that much boost?
    do 22RET's have forged internals??
    thanks for any input:D

Ive got one of those heads for sale, make me an offer ! I beleive stock internals are forged on 20r 22r 22re and 22ret... I had mine running boost for a while with ebay pistons and was realiable till I over heated it !and it did blow at 22 pounds by the way... just take a early 22r motor with dome pistons and put regular flat tops in.. or ebay turbo pistons.. that would work fine.. no idea on compression though

oooooo naww man im pretty sure i can get my old one back...
well i would use my early block for this bt its my only block n its hard to come across a good early block here for real cheap!
i have another motor in my current truck..lazer block. but im not too confident that that block will handle much more abuse.. ive heard that 3vz pistons would work?? what other toyota OEM pistons would work for a swap??even if the block has to be bored out..and how difficult would it be to go NA-T? i hear with 7m motors its alot cheeper and easier to just buy a turbo block than to modify..

the only thing you have to change really is the pistons.. toyota sells the turbo pistons for 100 bucks each, if you buy 4 im sure they will give u a discount.. or buy some on ebay cheaper..

um....someone will correct me if im wrong, but i heard it takes A LOT of machine work to get a 20R head on a laser block...

maybe im confused now re-reading your post... are you going to turbo the hybrid or a second motor?

no.. im going to turbo a lazer block and try using the early head that has a deeper chamber than a lazer head..i heard its just a timing issue..a tall head on a tall block right??wow might need a longer chain!

The domed pistons are in a tall block. The pistons would stick out of the deck an 1/8th on an inch at least.

If you really want to run high boost, (like more than 8psi) your gunna have to buy forged pistons. RET pistons are not forged and even those will scatter with a little detonation.

Your gunna need to surface mill the head and block to a fine finish (RA).
    Use a cometic MLS headgasket.
    head studs
Forged pistons with file fitted rings.
And preferrably shot peened and relived rods.

And I wouldnt worry about the intake. It isnt going to "explode" or anything.

Then you can boost it too the moon. Dont lean it out tho.

bro, I put a early 22r head on a lazer block and it fit fine but it was with my original timing chain, or well the one that came with the motor I have no idea how many miles were on it but it was stock.. I put the head on and couldnt get it to idle because the timing was off.. I did not know it had a different height at the time... I see where your trying to go and it WILL WORK. pm me if you have any questions. Ill go into detail about what you need, and dont need. Im not saying nobody on here knows what they are talking about. But I DID do this trial and error so I found out first hand under my own hood what works and does not. If I had money, I would have a turbo setup in both of my trucks right now..
