Just pickup up an 89 22r (138xxx) 4speed truck for dirt cheap. Looks decent and runs. Came with all history and only work done was oil changes, brakes and tires. It bogs in 2nd and 3rd unless foot in is the floor and lags from a stop. I know the 22re engine but don't know much about carb engines. I going to due plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter and check timing. Any tips or advice would be great.
It's not going to pull very hard in any gear since it has 3.07's to make up for the lack of 5th gear. A solid tuneup and checking the carb & timing settings is a good idea too.
Stock carb? If its stock carb. Id go and get a webber. But for the bogging u might wanna check the pickup line in the gas tank. I had a 82 4x4 4speed pick up line in the tank was pretty clogged
Does the bog get better or worse when the truck warms up? How did the plugs look when you changed them? How is the fuel pressure?
Bogs same cold or hot. Haven't pulled any plugs. Gets a parts order ready. Fuel pressure? How can I check? Like I said still learning the carb world.
I had the same problem with my 22r. Also had the 4speed, and it bogged pretty bad about half throttle in all gears. I changed plugs and set the timing and it made all the difference in the world
Gauge temporarily plumbed inline. However from your description of it not being affected by temperature I am thinking ignition timing is the most likely culprit.
Try this before making any adjustments to the carb. Most likely all the ports are clogged and $hitty vacuum lines http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/maintenance-repair-20/carburetor-tune-up-1609/
.... also, maybe run a tank of 91 octane fuel, or dump some SeaFoam in with a full tank. and half a bottle with the engine oil. its the first thing i did when i first bought my truck. and had all other fluids flushed as well.
I forgot to mention that I had desmogged my engine. In doing so, I replaced many of the vacuum lines.
If you decide to adjust the valves, make sure you follow directions and do them while hot. My truck sounded worse than a diesel engine when I did them cold. I was too lazy to go back and re-do them so I drove around like that for a few years until I had to take my truck in for some other service...
