Hoping one of you can help me out. I am in the process of rebuilding a 22r and need to check the oil clearance on the main bearings. Do i run a feeler gauge between the crank and face of the main bearing? the Haynes manual gives the specification but not where or how to get the measurement.

i appreciate any help on this. Cheers!

Just go to the parts store and get some green plastigage. You have to cut a piece the width of your bearing and torque the bearing cap with the bearing installed (don't turn the crank), then unbolt the bearing cap and measure with the plastigage guide. Google plastigage for the instructions if you need to.

I had my crank and block undersized for O/S bearings.
    Make everything clean
remove the caps, lay the strips across, torque it down. Try not to spin the crank.
remove and hopefully it smudged enough to tell you where you're at.
record the findings and ask the machinist or verify the specs are within tolerance range according to service manual.

Thanks guys. They look good. they are right in the range for where they should be. When i torqued down the caps i followed the manual and did 45ft pounds and then an additional 90 degrees. I found out later that it only calls for that extra 1/4 turn on the v6 motors. So did that extra 1/4 turn strech the bolts and, now that i have checked the clearances do i need to get new cap bolts? torque them down to 45ft lb and the extra 1/4? just torque to the 45? do you guys use lock tight at all? just don't want this thing comming apart after i get it back in the truck..

    Thanks again!

If your doing the crank only, the main bearing caps are torqued to 70-85 ft/pd, so your fine, the rod caps are 45.
    ps, no loctite
