Im in the process of building a replacement engine for my well worn 22r. I already have a nice weber 38 installed on the worn engine. So far I have my extra engine torn down, crank is getting turned, block bored and hone to 30 over. Going to reuse my stock intake with weber carb. Getting new street cylinder head from Engnbldr with larger valves. Bought a new stock replacement exhaust manifold which I ported and media blasted for better flow. Im getting new rocker shafts and rocker arms and rebuilding the rocker assembly. Im stuck now on which cam to run. My previous 22re I installed the EB 268 cam and it was decent but also on a 4x4 truck with large tires. This build is going in my standard cab 2wd truck so looking something a little hotter. Figured I would share my progress so far and get some input from you guys on cam selection.
I just picked up a rv3 cam from Oregon Cam Grinders for $70.. Don't remember the specs but it's supposed to be a pretty aggressive street/strip but daily driver able.. I'll email them and ask for specs I don't know what it's like yet as the motor is done yet, but it's also a 22r bored 30 over with a ported/polished head with EB oversized valves.. Will be running my weber 32/36 and a pacesetter header
In my opinion that Weber 38 is a bit too much.I would have gone with the 32/36.I have run a Web 280 and later a 292 with a 32/36.The 280 had a mild rock and mild performance boost. The 292 had a pretty serious rock and a very noticeable boost in performance. With the 292 I had to run LC dual valve springs to keep my valves from hitting the pistons.
I forgot to mention I'll be running z28 springs for a SBC.. Buddy had an incomplete set so he selling them to me for cheap!
Ive heard nothing but good about the 38 weber for street use and ive been very happy with mine. Currently pushing 28-30 mpg to boot. I ended up ordering a Camshaft from the guys over at Delta cam. Got one of there 272 grinds on order. I talked to a ton of different folks before deciding on Delta. This is the first time I have done business with them so we will see how it turns out and I will give an update after I get the motor built and installed. So the official specs are, Weber 38, EB RV head with oversized valves. 30 over pistons. 272 Delta Camshaft. Extreme port job done on oem exhaust manifold. Exhaust is streight piped to a regular quiet walker muffler and then new but stock like tail pipe. All new goodies like timing chain with steel guide, new timing cover, water pump, oil pan, oil pump and strainer etc etc etc.... Plans are to drive it another 300,000 trouble free miles with a timing chain job at every 80,000 or so.
