Alright, there's the black knob that's on the side of the manifold and it has a line leading to the A/C VSV. There's also lines from it to the P/S.
I wanna know how you adjust the A/C.
I'll have the A/C on and as I drive on the highway and let off the gas, it'll coast and when it hits about 60mph, it'll surge. really weird.

I messed with the black adjustment knob today and if i go clockwise, at idle and at a stop, out of gear, the truck would be cold, but put it into drive, and it's not cold. ish.
I turned the thing clockwise several turns and it somewhat gets colder.

Help me? A/C takes a beating on my mpg's alot and I'm not sure if the 22RE A/C's are supposed to be that much of a load. (i swear it shouldn't be)

And what tool do you guys use to read the truck's RPM's if you don't have a tach?

Well, you can buy a tach gun. But, I've never actually checked mine. My A/C has always done the same thing with the exception of always being cold. As far as the surges anyways.

I believe that all that knob does is adjust the kickup. How much will the milage go up if you don't use the Air?

    Give this a try this.
Start truck, and take note of the rpm it is at.
With the truck on turn on the ac and notice the rpm jump.
turn the knob clockwise so that the there is no rpm jump, then turn it the opposite way to raise the rpm's
turn it so that it raises the rpm about 3-400rpms. and stop turning when it reaches the new rpm's

example truck on no ac rpm is 750, with the ac on the rpms are at 1000

now go inside the truck and press the brake, if it surges close the valve a little bit.
give that a try and report back.

The knob on the intake is to kick up the idle when turning the steering wheel so the truck doesn't die and has more power to turn the tires. There is a black box on top of the a/c box behind the dash with a knob on it to adjust the idle when the a/c is turned on.

The current setup is that it will start cooling and does not surge. I'll play with it some more and try to get the optimal setting.

I appreciate the help and info guys.

As far as I know, i've messed with the black knob with vacuum ports before, but not the A/C amplifier under the dash. That's been untouched.

Small knob behind the glove box sets what RPM your AC compressor kicks on. Its does not change idle speed.

Big knob on side of the plenum only works when AC is on and VSV switch works as it should. Follow toy_spd's directions for adjustment.

I set my 90 model with the slush box to 850-900 rpms at idle/park, 1100 with the AC on and also in park. No surging when brakes are applied...

Go to the local auto store and pick up an aftermarket tach for trouble shooting unless you feel like mounting it... It only needs 3 wires to work RED (12v) BLACK (ground) Green (- side of coil) or there is a small terminal by your diagnostics box that says "tach" you can plug in the green wire there. That should be most convienient since the battery is right there too... After your done setting the idle and kick-up idle, return the tach and get yuor money back...
