I just bought this sweet 1986 Toyota Pickup. It only had 31,000 miles on it when I bought it. The little old lady goes to chuch thing, all documented. Everything was original, so I have been replacing belts/plugs and so on. It is also an automatic, rare I know. It has 33,000 miles now on it and the oil was just changed before I bought it. So I just changed the oil last night. It looks to be using lots of oil. Not leaking it and not smoking out the tailpipe. Maybe not being driven much, do you think just replacing rings will make a difference? Any Ideas. I would hate to to a full overhaul on a vehicle with such low miles. Is there any other reason why it may be using so much oil? it runs great. Thanks
Check the PCV valve. Is there any oil in the air filter housing ? I would run it a while, maybe with that few miles it never broke in properly and running it a bit might. Keep an eye on the oil level though. 22R88
Changed air filter also. Very clean in the housing. Carb looks like new. I would say it was at least 2 quarts low, when I changed oil and I know it was full, when I got it home, so 2000 miles it used 2 quarts or a little more. I did not think to check it that often when it had such low miles on it, but the thought entered my mind that it had not been driven enough when I bought it and it may be a issue with wear on the rings from dry start ups.
loosing oil I would think if you were getting blow by you would see some smoke or smell the burning oil. pull one of your plugs and see how it looks. Make sure your oil is not mixing in your water.
I would guess valve seals, with it being sitting most of it's life. First do a compression check and that will let you know about your rings. If compression is even between cylinders then I would say valve seals are bad.
Changed plugs last night. Old plugs looked new, but changed them anyway. I will have to get a compression tester. Exhaust looks clear. No water with oil or vise versa. Checked last night. It runs great, but oil went somewhere. I kind of wondered if valve seals may be bad.
Also it hase been a few years, but did'nt the 22 r's have to have the valves adjusted. I see one one receipts a year or so after it was purchased they were adjusted.
valve seal What do you mean adjusted? I dont know it sounds like you're loosing a lot of oil and if you seals were bad you would be burning the oil and smoking out. Pull your coil plug and crank it a few times then pull one of your plugs and check if there is oil on it.
Don't forget to check the obvious. When she owned it, did the drain plug get stripped and possibly leak oil? Was the oil filter improperly replaced, leaving two gaskets against the block, causing a leak? If the engine compartment is messy, maybe pressure wash under there real well, and look for a leak. There are additives you can put in the oil, that will show a leak with the aid of a black light. Sounds like you got a cream puff, once you sort through that problem. Mark
It is parked in the garage, no leaks. I have been under it and no signs of leaks. Exhaust looks normal. I will be undercoating it this weekend some time. I live in Northern Iowa and Toyota's had bad rust problems in those years, so want to stop it before it starts. Front tires are still original I already replaced the back ones. Needed to be replaced, a little weather checking. Engine comparment is clean. As for Cream Puff you are right it is Cream Color 557 toyota color. I will get pictures in the near future. Kind of hectic around Christmas. I bought it because a lot of my friends had the toyota's truck when I was in high school and they were runners, but rust was a problem. I have most of the receipts. It was bought for $9000 in 1986. One receipt, from the dealer stated on it -valves adjusted. Not sure what it means myself. I get comments on it all the time. It is small and cute, I guess. I was at Advanced Auto last week getting new belts for it and one of the guys working there came out and took a picture of it. It has Air conditioning in it but does not work, but the lady bought a compressor and never had it put in, so I got a new compresor in a box. More to come.
I have a 1986 2WD SR5 Extra-cab I bought new for $10,200 with 418,000 miles and I get people all the time walking up asking if I want to sell it. Do the small repairs and it will last as parts online Rock Auto are plentiful and cheap.
