Howdy from Bryan, TX! This Florida transplant may have found himself a TX girl a few streets away from his house. She's a 1980 (according to the Mexican fella) Toyota Pickup, 20r (I presume... the sicker has come off but there is no power steering or AC), 4spd, and I keep forgetting to write down the miles. As you can see she's painted black but I have reason to believe the original color was blue. But enough of my jawjackin' I know your all mehanophiles and want your pics Here she is behind bars: These kinda neat looking headlight shields, your guess is as good as mine where they came from or what they are for: Her Blemishes: Looks like a DIY windshield gasket, thoughts? A little scar over her right eye What looks to me like some bubbling under the paint under the side rails (I havent had a chance to go back and feel on them since I last saw the guy) Her undersides as visible from the street: Junk in the trunk: Oblgatory back of her head photo: And my last sexy oblique: The Mexican fella said he'd sell it for 1300 but the inspection sticker is out, so in a week once I have the money together Im going to ofer him 1k cash or 1200 if he gets it inspected in two weeks.
before you go offering $1k, make sure it starts.... and drives. check the oil for a blown head gasket, coolant for contamination. and snap some pics of the engine. that is definitely a respray, possibly a bomb can or macco job. all the trim pieces have been sprayed silver, id be wary of a bondo queen. check the whole truck with a magnet.
It does run, I'll be back to take it around the block here pretty soon as well as snap some pics of the engine bay as per request. Its kinda tough catchng the owner, he runs some sort of shop but its only open at night and not all that regularly. The mechanic next door doesent get it either, he thnks its some sort of car club. Any idea whats up with those headlight covers though? I've never seen anything like that before
headlight covers look very interesting.... I'd say take the truck but seems to be better than nothing! but yeah... $1000 is wayy too much...
I dunno about this one... Seems somewhat sketchy to me... :: shrug :: to each their own... I would check the history of that one out if you can... I don't think I'd pay $1k for that... Anyway, whether you pick that up or not, welcome to the site... I'm a Florida transplant myself, but I went quite a ways to end up out near Seattle. I grew up in Pensacola.
I was born in Jax and grew up mostly in Tampa. I lived up by you for a littl ebit though when my dad was stationed at Everett. Here are some more pics, I took a ton but the glare killed most of them: A rusty ding on the tail gate: The rust: And yep its just a catalytic converter and about 12" of pipe. Its far enough behind the cab to be legal here in TX. Driver side door, the passenger side door looked A-OK Here is the cab floor under the mats: It WAS originaly blue but pased the magnet test so Im guessing somebody just wanted a black truck No break fluid leaks: Dash could look better but the BMW sticker and Virgin Mary do have a little charm on their own And the engine: Emissions part disconected Battery nice and laced up And the Radiator The side mirrors are a little weird, They have been moved, but arent attatched in the same spot on eiter side so it looks a little weird. The lights al work, it starts and runs fine, no smoke out of the exhust. I didnt hear any knock, the oil is clear and topped off. And it's a 5 speed not a 4 which surprised me.
the thing id be worried about now would be weather or not it needs emissions testing. the emissions have been F'd with on that truck, the missing belt of the air pump is proof. i wouldnt pay over $800 for it. there is a lot of rust on that cab, proof by the RTV around the windshield (should be a rubber gasket). it looks like the PO cut a lot of corners to make it look nice, but i would be wary of jery-rigged things to make it run, and sketchy looking wiring. also that radiator looks like someone left it in while they yanked the motor. also the exhaust gasket is not the correct one for that truck, nether is the uppper radiator hose. looks like the PO subscribed to the "make it work, cheap n easy" method.
The emissions sticker only just expired, so a year or so ago it passed but that doesent mean anything. The RTV is over the gasket and I didnt get a good shot of the inside of the windshield but I didnt find any rust or spots that didnt feel right wherever I could jam my fingers. The rain guters were also clear of rust which surprised to me. I need to get my smooth talking shoes on for my next visit it seems. I apreciate the input from everybody, it would be my first used car purchase and Im trying to be pro-active but I knew if I tossed it up here I would get some good advice from some guys who had spent some time with their noses in some Toyota grease. Also, are my pictures to borad specifications? I've picked up on how much everybody likes pictures of everything. The sun worked against me on the last round though im afraid.
The covers on the headlights are misplaced on this truck... the "half moon" was popular in the late 50's - early 60's, and the "eyebrow" was a popular add-on much earlier (also popular on early VW Beetles). I can't say I've ever seen them in tandem... Everybody has their own tastes, but I'd pull both sets off the truck. Good luck on the project!
That's the half moon!?!??! That's what i did on my truck... with heavy duty aircraft grade aluminum tape...
Crap Mike P ya beat me to it, but yeah I have never seen the two together, very popular with vdubs, the half moons were called stoners in socal, as far as the rest of the truck it looks like at one time somebody tried to make some money with a basket case and what you are lookin at now is the obvious hints from the hacker that did the work, dont be implusive and relax, something better will come along, you'll kick yourself after you have about 40 hours into the thing. Ask yourself whats your time worth.
welcome and DAMN ... we dont have emission crap here in Alabama no wonder everyone looks inbred around here....it you wanna drive to bama i would sell you my 84 yota for 750. that thing is hood fo sho lots of rust and rust is natures beauty...
Welcome! *Texas law states any vehicle 25 years old or older is exempt from smog/emissions testing...
