I am the original owner of an 1980 4x4 pu. The exhaust just started spewing out huge clouds of steam...which looks like a blown head gasket or cracked head. The engine was operating at normal temps when it started. Checking the dipstick, there was no sign of coolant in the crankcase. Could someone give me some hints of head removal and torque specs on this original engine?
Don't forget the bolt in the pool of oil directly below the cam gear. If you don't pull it you will end up breaking the timing cover when you pry the head off.
Are you absolutely sure its blown? How cold was the weather? Did the motor start to idle or run rough? Did you check the plugs to verify water in there (before you start tearing into the head)
Hi thx for the imput. I am in Arizona(Phx area), the outside temp was approx 55 degrees when it happened. I made the trip to work with huge clouds of steam from my tail-pipe. On the way home in about 3 miles the temp shot up to RED so I parked it and had it towed to my home. Most of the coolant was gone from the radiator. I started the project yesterday...but have a long way to go. I was also considering the carb/choke, where coolant runs through the choke, but didn't see how it could have migrated into the carb. I can use all tips. Thankyou very much.
THX for the major tip! Also, can I remove the head with the intake assy? I found it too difficult to remove the exhaust head pipe, afraid to wring the 3 bolts. Would it be ok to support the exhaust pipe then disconnet the manifold while on the engine?
Yea you can leave the exhaust manifold on the pipe and slide it out of the way no problem. The intake is easy to take off but you can leave it on the year if need be.
