I've got a 1978 truck with a build date of "JUL/78". On-line parts sources list clutch part numbers as being "to 7/78" or "from 8/78". I'm not sure where mine would fit in. I'm replacing the L43 transmission with what I believe to be a W50 series of unkown vintage. Has anyone done this 4 speed to 5 speed conversion, and what did you experience with the clutch? Thanks.
Any clutch from at least 76 till 90 will be the smaller clutch. I want to say its 8 7/8" while the later 22re, 22ret and V6 all use the larger 9 5/16" clutch. (Those measurements are from memory, their correctness may vary from exact.). You can use a larger clutch directly if you use the later style flywheel that is correct for the pressure plate.
did you get this swap done yet? if so what problems or issues did you have or what modifications did it require? i ask because i have a 78 with an l43 and im wanting to do a 5spd swap. any pointers or advise for me? thanks in advance
i swapped my 82's 4spd for a 5 out of a 84 celica straight swap used the 4spd f.w/clutch/p.p just stuck the trans in and drilled two new holes in the mount ear farther back to set the mount back could have got the 5spd mount ear for the crossmember but im a cheap redneck my 78 was originaly a sr5 so the 84 celica trans bolted right in on that one too i think i might have had to mount the crosmember on the rear most set of holes if you want the best replacement clutch go with the set for a 84 22r 4wd or one from a 86-7 22rte 151 5spd
A build date of July '78 will still be a 1978 model. In August is when the production year changes (Aug '78 will be a 1979 model). Rick
