    It lives again.

After sitting in the mountains for twenty plus years and having its engine yanked out with all the resulting damage, this 1974 SR5 ran again last night at 7 PM.

My last problem was the Weber carb that was spilling over. As Dillin speculated, the float was off. A neighbor sat down with me and we took the Weber apart. He showed me hands on how to clean and inspect it.

Turned out the float was in upside down.:duh:

We put it back on the manifold, and the whole engine turned over --- and sustained!! It was amazing! :clapping: I was about to junk the whole project.

The back wheels were turning as the rear end was on jacks. It was sight to see. I'll take my small victories, thank you.

Now I have to put in:

    A) transmission fluid ( How much? What type? )

    and

    B) exhaust fix from the exhaust manifold flange to the muffler pipe.

( Whoever ripped out the old engine just hacked off the exhaust pipe. Any thought on how to repair this one?)

Still have more work to do, but I think I've just gotten past the hardest part. In retrospect, all the things tat needed to be done are so simple and easy. But going through it all and actually doing it was a difficult, exasperating, but amazingly valuable learning process that increase my knowledge vastly.

Thanks to Toyota Minis and the Toyota Minis community for all the insights and help. Appreciated!

I gots no truck, for now
if its an auto just normal dexIII, if its a manny normal 90 weight gear oil. I would start with 2 quarts of dexIII start it and check, you may have to add up to 2 more quarts if the trans is really low, maybe even more if the torque converter is empty. On the manny you cant add too much cause the fill hole is on the side.

Congrats! dont run it too long on the auto with no fluid in it, its bad for all sorts of stuff in the trans.

Terrific! It sounds like a sigh of relief the moment you fired up the motor. Nice job on getting an oldie to come back to life.

Regarding transmission fluid, I would go 100% synthetic. I use Amsoil in transmission, rear diff, & in the motor. They say almost 5 pints will do the trick.

Exhaust fix: if you cannot locate a donor, then I'd ask the muffler shop if they can fab one up for you. Or, if you know of somebody that can do this for you.

    Keep us posted!

I put in standard transmission fluid today, about 1 and 3/4 bottles.
    This is temporary.

I was told to run this fluid for a bit.
Then drain it since the truck has sat for so long and has an unknown history.

    Drain it and the differential.
Then put in one bottle of transmission fluid and one bottle Lucas Transmission additive.
    ( 1:1 ratio )

Do this drain and refill ration for BOTH differential and transmission.

    Thoughts and opinions?
    Beneficial? Not?
    Which tranny fluid?
    Any and all thoughts appreciated.
