new to the site, this is my first toyota mini truck, i got this truck from a guy down the street from my house, he had it sitting in a field for a few years, it already has a 18r-u engine, which is the japan smog motor, im installing a 5 speed, ive already 4 linked the rear and bagged it all around, im going to make a new front cross member and a-arms for it to lay it out with out all the massive camber, also thinking of making dropped spindles for it, anyways should be a good project, let me know what you guys think
if anyone knows where i can find any parts for these trucks any help is much appreicated, i need a tail gate, front passenger fender and door, thanks
I think your truck ownssss. thats why I wanted to buy it. good to hear your into it again. Do you already have your 5speed tranny? I have a rebuilt one if your interested and a 20R
awesome truck now im gonna bust your balls a bit you have a 18r NOT the bad ass 18rg, which is a dual overhead cam 160hp JDM aluminum head monster from the early 70's. instead you got the boat anchor version (like i did). i dont care if it did come from japan (every toyota up to 83 came from there), its still a cast iron head n block n tranny case. better off putting a 2xr in there. other then that i wish you super good luck on finding replacement body panels, seriously. if you do end up making drop spindles for it, put me down as wanting a set. color me F'n stoked to have another serious build on a old skool. ill do my best to help
I have a motor that came out of a 85 corolla, I thought it was a 22r but It says 4a on it, is that a good motor or should I do a 2xr
welcome! i've seen you on seths site before. dude if you swap your motor i'm interested in the 18r exhaust manifold (probably carb and intake assembly as well) let me know!
does the motor have dual overhead cams? big difference between the 4afe and the 4a-c. the 4a-c is a pos, the 4age is preety sweet. if its this motore (4age) use it if its this motor dont (4a-c) the 22r is much better.
Ya its the 4a-c, so is the 20r any good, thanks for all the help really appreciate it, new to toyotas
a lot of people will say the 20r isnt as good as a 22r but i think other wise. i think a 20r responds better to bolt on goodies (cam, big carb) then a 22r. and after have both in a couple different rigs, i cant tell the difference between the two. cept the 20r seems to rev better, due to the better flowing head. the real difference, is its a lil harder to find intakes for the 20r. its a older motor, and there were a lot more 22r's built then 20r's. both of my celica's have 20r's. i had a 22r in one for a while then went back to the 20r. no real difference, just seemed happier in there.
well i kinda have a limited budget on this truck, so i might change to a 20r if i can find a cheap one some where, for now i might just put a 5 speed on and drive it for awhile, unless anyone wants to trade a motor and trans for any fab work
Hmm.... I have a 8RC and hate the 4 speed... Can you do a 5spd swap on these? or am I up poop creek cause I have the 8RC... let me know bro, and welcome to the site
the theory is: all R series engs have the same bell housing pattern all W series trannys, have interchangeable bell housings. ive only proven that personally with 18,20,22r and w40,50,55,58 ive heard the 8r subscribed to that theory, but i havent ever heard that from sombody with one or seen one in person.
thats what i was thinking about doing on my 73. new subframe that bolts to the stock holes that doesn't require a z'd frame. i don't want to screw with the rear mounted steering box.
yup it seemed easier for me just to make a cross member and new arms then z the frame and modify the stock arms and mess with the steering, plus i just really dont like the way the bottom arms mount on and i havnt checked yet but i think the cross member might hang lower then my frame, not positive
it looked to me like they would when laid out. i was thinking of making lowers with standard link bushings, the originals look a little chincy.
Old school kewl, yet another " must see & follow " thread in these forums . . . Kep up the good work, youve got some very helpfull people backing you . . .
