I'm new to all of this forum posting and online threads deal, but I'm even greener at this rebuilding stuff. I will be performing as much of the build as I possibly can with the help of family members who have expertise in Body building and mechanics. I will also need help from you guys. Help with direction to parts, specs, and anything concerning my 70' Hilux. I'm looking forward to this build and the help you guys will provide. My first Question is in regards to posting pics. I attached some pics (some will be re-posted in this thread) to a previous post, but I attached them as thumbnails. I have noticed that some of you posted Build pics that are big and well detailed and are not thumbnails. How can i post my pics like that? I'll wait to post the pictures in my build, so they will do justice to how good the pickup looks. Peace
Here are some pics of my project Hilux. Can anybody tell me what engine this is, the decals have been worn out. How good is this engine, is it worth rebuilding or should i look for something else.
good lookin lux! here is how to post pics. the look of the site has changed a bit, but it's the same process. http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/site-suggestions-13/diy-posting-pics-pics-5029/
its a 8rc motor and they are good, but if you want to drive faster then 80, start looking for a new motor
I just finished installing the new wheel cylinders all the way around, as well as shoes. Was not to hard but the cylinders were expensive. I will rebuild the old cylinders, they are for a 1970 hilux 8rc. If anybody ever need them just let me know, (gonna try and make some of that money back!) Anyway the master cylinder is shot too, im waiting for the new one to get here tomorrow. If all goes well my Lux should be road-worthy by tom. cant wait to drive the S#%$ out of it, at least until I'm ready ($) for sheet metal, paint, upholstery, and hopefully engine.
Rockauto.com is a great source of part at a decent price. Wheel cylinders from $20-35. Rebuild kits $1.50-2.75. Love the Cragars
Yep, at $35 and $40 dollars a pop I spent about $300 dollars with shoes. O well I guess I know where to go for parts now, I still have an 8rc engine to rebuild as well as a tranny, and who knows what fun lies under that rusty cab and bed. That's cool you noticed the Cragars. When I bought my Lux it was on blocks in this guy's back yard, and those exact rims where the ones I had on my mind. I was so F'n excited when I saw the guy come out of the garage rolling those wheels and rubbers! I plan on lowering the front end a 1/2 in. or an inch, Give it a sporty stance. Don't get me wrong I love what you guys do with the bags and the custom suspension, you guys are artists and very talented, but the slamin' and bagin' isn't for me. We have dirt roads in Idaho and I plan on driving the hell out of my Lux. Thanx for the feedback keep it coming. Peace.
On mine, we cut 2 coils off the front springs and it was A LOT of drop. More than 2" if I had to guess. The bump stops on the front don't allow a lot of travel, so plan on trimming them back before after you take a maiden voyage. And when you trim them, don't cut them more so the tire hits the fender since your tires stick out a little. If you cut the coils to achieve your drop, i'd cut a half a coil off and see how it looks. The spring clamps that are available are a huge PITA in my opinion. If you haven't removed the spindles yet (which you'll have to do to get to the coil in order to lower it) expect a big battle to break the ball joints. Mine were a nightmare to get off. (10lb sledge, balljoint breaker, 300lb man) Good luck, these are cool little trucks and this is a great place to get information.
cool truck. thats a interesting brake master cylinder with the off set reservoir ,i have not seen that one out there. check out how the old owner left the old tank and hoses bunched up there, and the 6 feet of coil wire. you got some cleaning up to do,but whats cool is how cheap all these parts are. have fun, make it pretty
Actually the Reservoir with the bunched hose is the Master Cylinders' working tank. The Offset tank is a custom job the previous owner did for the clutch cylinder/reservoir or whatever. And you are right I'm gonna have a lot of cleaning up, ALOT! I really love what you did with your Lux. I'm shooting for a similar look, diff. color. If its possible I'd like to do a cable tuck and hide all the wires on that engine, but that's a big maybe, there are much more important things I'd like to do. But your engine work is something to envy, I hope you don't mind me taking some ideas from it. I'll need some direction as to parts, you said that parts are cheap, I'd like to know where you go for parts. I would really appreciate it. Peace
i get everything off of ebay. search for these words. toyota 8rc toyota 8r toyota 18r toyota 18rc toyota 1.8 toyota 1800 toyota 1858 toyota 1900 toyota RN10 toyota RN12 69-71 hilux toyota corona you got to dig through all kinds of crap searching but you find some cool stuff cheap in weird places there toyotas and there old and simple as dirt,so they dont realy need nothing. you just have to take things apart scrub and clean and paint as needed all of the s#it and put it all back together. pints of various cheap paint some tiny brushes and tape go a long way, weeks of work will go by with out hardly spending no money and stuff starts looking good. some small wire tooth brushes and scotch brite pads. with a hundered bucks spent you would not even recognize that engine compartment it would look so good. your fingers will hurt though my engine compartment used to look like s#it. all that shiny stuff and pretty black stuff is wire brushing ,rustoleum spray clear , tiny water color brushes and paint, and hand buffing. a pain in the @ss but its worth it. any questions i would be glad to help.
Hey you may want to go this route for lowering. This forum is about using Mighty May coil springs to lower the front. http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/suspension-chassis-47/alternative-coil-spring-set-up-7552/
where in idaho are you? i'm in boise. these are great old trucks. i've had mine for about 8 months now and am really enjoying it. she's my daily driver and has been pretty dang reliable. good luck with the build.
