ok so ive looked at some peoples builds and i remember seeing then do the chain replacement without pulling the head off.

i just got a 130k engine out of a 85 celica that ran good but the p.o. did the chain but didnt replace the tensioner so the guide he put on broke.:doah:

the engine will be on my stand shortly and i have a kit already but was wondering whats the best way to do the chain without pulling the head, although i have a freshened up head still in the plastic wrap just collecting dust

and are there any other things i should look for or do while replacing the chain, i know about the hidden bolt thogh.

just take off the timing cover, dont forget the two oil pan bolts..once you get the timing cover off you will have to remove the camshaft sprocket bolt you'll be able to drop the sprocket and chain down through the front of the head, i think i have some pics in my build up thread..check it out

oh also be sure to replace your driver side guide with a metal one!

Hey all, i know this is an old thread, but where is this hidden bolt, my searches led me here for answers, I have my pan dropped now, ac, p/s, everything off the front, and tapping with a plastic hammer is not budging it, - i may be missing this hidden bolt. I followed the FSM - but i am trying to not pull the head (save a gasket and labor). - OT by the way - new guy. 91 22RE, drivers side guide is broke, and the front main seal was leaking, - new timing set and seals are ready. - I followed some build threads but didn't catch the hidden bolt location, I dont want to break the cover. Thanks - Pics to come. Been thrashing to get back on the road! - Manual said to lift motor 1 inch, but the pan is not coming out the bottom unless I drop the cross member and drag link no? It in on the intake manifold toward the front. It is an alen bolt. (this is to remove the timing cover correct)

two hidden bolts. One is on the front of the head inside after you take the valve cover off (you fill the oil here). It'll be sitting in a puddle of oil. The other is only if you're removing the intake manifold. The one inside the head actually bolts the top of the timing cover to the head. When you reassemble make sure and put some fipg on the top of the timing cover.

Ok thanks, I got the one in the front of the head, the one through the water pump, and all other I found. It is all original so the cover is stuck on the motor pretty good. I got a head set just in case, but hoping to use it on another motor. - I have some rtv to use on the top. Thanks for the info, this is my first 22RE - had a new one in 1990 but I never got to wrench on it for the years I drove it.

Is it pretty safe to assume if the water pump has 'toyota' cast into it , that it is probably original? Trying to figure out what else i should replace while it is all apart, still locating all the hoses as everything was oil soaked from the seal leak. 210K on the oddo and it doesn't work so it's seen some road time!

I bought a full kit for mine off ebay, Just replacing the parts with my discount at Autozone at the time would have been around $350... The kit had timing cover, chain, metal guides, all new tensioners, gears, water pump, oil pump, and all gaskets for about $150

Wow that is a good deal! - Time to do some shopping on ebay! - I spent about $56 for the timing set then $40 for the pump. The old water pump seemed ok, so I put it back on after doing the chain. Well for some reason the pump started leaking, so I wound up replacing the water pump anyway. If I was smart I would have snagged one of the $200 master rebuild kits on ebay and just start replacing parts as needed.
