Hey all. Just joined and am interested in buying a pickup with the legendary 22re. I have a turbo toyota tercel with a 4efte engine swap that I did myself rather easily. I looked through the site and didn't see anything about the 22rte engine, but am wondering how well it will transplant into a pickup with the 22re? There's a 22rte on craigslist here and I'm just throwing around some ideas. Any suggestions/comments?

22RTE motors are pretty fun...... good base for some extra easy power. driven only a couple and you'd never think a 22re could feel so peppy.

a word of advise however...... in order to get everything right, i would pay close attention to what year truck you get your motor from as you will need the sensors and such from that year truck. ive heard people having a hard time getting things straight on a motor swap from different years........ a stand alone system however i think will simplify those headaches...

It's out here in the middle of new mexico. Says it's got 140,000 miles on it. Looks in ok shape from the picture. Emailed the guy and he doesn't have wiring harness or ecu and the original truck is long gone, so if I really need vehicle specific sensors then maybe it's more trouble than it's worth. Too bad, reliability plus a little turbo is exactly what I'm looking for, and I love these rare factory turbo motors. What about turbo on a standard 22re? Been done? Or is the compression ratio different on the RTE?

the compression ratio is less in the RTE, but if ya get a 22re for cheap, rebuilt the bottom end and reflash or run a stand alone, you can make pretty good power with them. IF i was going for power and reliability and was set on doing a motor swap, and had the coin to afford it i would drop a 2jz either turbo or non turbo version in the truck.

Wow yeah I definitely thought about the 2jz, but isn't the 22re supposed to be the longest lasting toyota engine around? And the 2jz is a flat six right? I've always heard for longer lasting engines you want lower comp ratio and less cylinders. Would you need custom motor mounts and custom drive shaft for the 2jzgte swap?

yep, you would need mounts, driveshaft cut, as well as the ECU and harness for the 2jz. Power for the buck the 2jz is the best swap, and the motors last pretty long as well. The 22re's are great motors in their N/A state, i cannot deny or confirm how well the turbo versions of those motors last cause everyone ive seen has had a hard life and doesnt get the 200K or so that the N/A versions get.

Shouldn't be a problem boosting a stock 22re, just keep the boost below 5 psi... Fuel injector and timing upgrades are needed for more boost...

    Good luck!

lower compression, open up the head, a plenum type intake with shorter runners, larger injectors, fpr, standalone, a T3 or similar turbo setup, and that would get you FAR.

a cam would be neat :D

Google, 22rte forums. That site is dedicated to the 22rte, there is a bunch of post about converting a 22re to run a turbo. I have a 22rte truck from the factory and its a bit peppy. But if you keep an eye out there are stock turbo trucks for sale. that site is a good place to start though

Thanks for the info everybody. I'll keep my eye open for a turbo truck or possibly a swap with the supra engine or the like.
