    Hey guys,

I just got this truck from my brother, when I got it it was missing badly and needed some attention. 89 with 140,00 miles, 22RE

I have replaced the plugs, wire, rotor, cap, thermostat, air filter, oil change, and i also just did valve adjustment, It runs a LOT better than before, but I am still having a misfire problem. It does not miss when it is in cold start, once it warms up it starts at idle.

I have pulled the codes and I got code 51, the truck did not come with A/C so the signal switch can't be the problem like the code says, but I have also read that the TPS can also throw a 51.

I am going to adjust the TPS tomorrow morning, and if that doesn't fix it I am going to do a compression and leak down.

any other idea's??? Timing? could the TPS be so out of adjustment its causing the miss???

    -Nate:cool:

ill have to think its your TPS if you done your tune up cap rotor and all. i would leave the timing out for now and check with your TPS?

The compression/leakdown test would be a good start, possible burnt valve or carbon buildup not letting a valve seat, if a leaky valve, they usually run a bit smoother when rich like when cold start or choked.

what you are saying makes sense, I hope to god I don't have to tear this thing apart.....:(

I didn't get a chance to adjust the TPS today I need to get my hands on a Fluke or multimeter.

Well I was able to check my TPS,

I used this to guide me
    http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml#Table1

however I did not have any feeler gauges or a way to space out the throttle to get proper measurement. So I checked WOT, and closed. here is what I got.

    0mm VTA- E2 I got 820, spec, 420-6100

    WOT VTA-E2 I got 5.4k spec is 3.1k- 12.2k

    0mm Vcc-E2 I got 6.8k spec is 3.9-9.0k

however these specs seem very broad to me , I figured if these 3 were in spec the others must be in or close to.

again the truck as a slight mis at idel when its warmed up, today I noticed that when i rev the engine and hold it at a certain RPM it starts to miss like crazy, like lets say I rev to 3000 RPMs and then lightly let off the pedal and hold it at 2500 it will start missing badly..... that also leads me to believe its something with the TPS

I don't know how much longer I am going to fidel around with this truck myself, I am about to take it to a professional hahaha

you might want to check the harness around the intake as well.

i know of 2 guys over @ www.celica-gts.com that had one of the injector wires rub on a casting mark and short out resulting in a misfire.

thanks for the heads up shonuff...... I am about to install and adjust the new TPS. I have yet to do any of the leakdown/compression tests yet.. I really dont think its a mechanical problem with engine, because the missfire is intermitten......... but I could be wrong, * knock on wood* LOL

I will report back tonight about this headache!!!
