This is sad, But atleast some of us care enough to bring it up and im glad you guys have. I joined this site like 5 or so months ago and have been on it everyday here at home and while im at work. This site can be so much better. I love all the ideas that have been said for a new forum but Titan is right on the most part and keeping it clean and simple intill more and more members show up before expanding to regional boards. I also like the fact of something to Give thanks or postive remarks, its always good to hear it when your trying your best and hardest to make your project what it is today. It makes you want to get up the next morning feeling good about yourself and work you have done.
Holy ****! I leave for a few hours and this thread grows by 10 pages!? What are you guys FEEDING it!? Anyway, I agree that THIS forum is already built, and the name is KINDA already established. However, IF this board dies, I think the new board should be called "toyotaminis.org" for a couple of reasons: 1. it's so familiar to the current name, that SIMILAR logos (stickers, shirts etc) could be made with very little effort. Merchandise which you can get ONLY by becoming a PAYING member, for $XX.XX a year-you'll also get free stickers for your truck and a t-shirt to wear around town to shows, etc. This will create visibility, and (hopefully) quality members. 2. by having a ".org" it shows that we're an organization's site, rather than a commerce site (get it? .ORG/ .COM), which seems more inviting to n00bz, and gives a friendlier feel to the name. We're an organization of toyota mini lovers, not a store. As far as organization goes : Bust it into years/ generations, then for each year or generation, have Body (sub -interior/exterior), Electrical, suspension Then have an engine and tranny section, split up by the common TYPEs of engine or tranny. 4 bangers (sub by years offered or type (20r,22r,22re,22ret,18rg, ect)) 6 bangers (sub by years) SWAPS! then just have an "upcoming events" section, which will be titled by location and date ONLY, like this " HaVoC 2010, whitesburg ky mm/dd/yy), this will eliminate the need for regional section because if you can attend, you'll know your driving distance and thus-who is in your area. Multi media section: sub pics sub vids sub show coverage Tech how to's maintence performance suspension //////////////////////////////// Seriously, I think this site is an excellent resource for the toyota enthusiast. There's a ton of knowledge floating around here, and ton of great people who just simply love these trucks, myself included. I'd love to see some mods, and some house keeping. Most importantly, I'd love to see this site (or one similar) really stick around. Also, no offense to guam guy, but I think ShoNuff had a dog in this fight, too. He was ready to rock with his **** out on page 3 or 4, but that was like a few hours ago, so I don't know whats going on now....
None taken my friend, it just sorta took off on us. I saw an opportunity and I ran with it. There is nothing set in stone, anyone who wants in can have it just trying to get something going here because like Obama said "It's Time for Change" or some crazy **** like that.
LOL! I can understand how the snowball effect takes off! It starts with a 2/3 drop and ends with bags and an engine swap! Also, one more thing. I personally would like to see a minimum post count before your allowed to post classified ads. I feel that this will keep people from using this as a sort of craigslist for toyotas and parts. If someone is just here to sell something, they can make 5-10 posts to introduce themselves, and give us some background info so we can gauge whether or not they know what they're selling, and whether or not they're trust worthy. I think it would keep people getting screwed to minimum, and keep the reputation of the site cleaner. Nobody wants to buy a NIB LCE cam from a n00b, only to receive it and find out that it's a stock cam and the seller is no longer around. Just as an example, not that this has happened.
Well I just got off the phone with Jeff the owner of this site and informed him about this post. I'll be waiting to see what he has to say about all this. He seems like a straight up guy and said he'll get on here and respond to this thread.
Wow, guys. This is just crazy. And to be honest, I'm pretty stunned. I just got off the phone with Chris (Guam_guy) and I'm actually quite surprised at how quickly everyone decided that the site sucks and how a new site needs to be started. Let me see where to start with this: Why don't we have any moderators? As this site has progressed and new members have joined, I've figured out that this site actually doesn't need that much moderation. Most you who sign up on here are friendly and don't stir up trouble with each other, which is more than I can say for some of the shenanigans that we dealt with over at CustomTacos. So for that, I thank you. And actually, we've had moderators in the past (who are still technically moderators) and over time, those two individuals have drifted away from the site. What I've ALWAYS stated here (and I'll state it again): If there's a problem with spam or a thread that needs to be moved from one topic area to another, all you have to do it report the thread (using the little button under the poster's name). I'll get an email IMMEDIATELY and will take the proper action. Just last week, in fact, we had a spammer who signed up and made a couple of posts. Someone reported the threads and I cleaned up and banned the spammer within about 30 minutes. Do we need more moderators? Perhaps. But I have to admit that I am VERY PICKY when it comes to selecting someone to help me run this site. After all, I've spent a lot of time getting it running and (as I'm sure you can imagine) one bad moderator can ruin a site. I've seen it happen. A good moderator knows the software, knows the site, and knows how to properly deal with situations that may arise. I'm also looking for someone very dedicated to the site, not someone who would spontaneously decide to go off and start their own site. "We need to clean this place up" Great! I just need someone to help me figure out what is wrong with the way the site currently is. Perhaps this is where a good moderator would come in. I think what I'm most suprised about with this thread is that nobody has even bothered to send me a PM to let me know that they were unhappy with how the site is run! I can't fix a problem that I don't know exists. So, hats off to Guam_guy for picking up the phone and calling me this morning. Yes, I'll admit that I'm not on this site every minute of every day. I have a very busy web development company that I run, as well as a family, as I'm sure you can understand. I come on here usually 3-4 times a week to check in on how things are going. And I rely on the community (that's YOU) to report any problems that need my attention. If I order merchandise, does it get shipped? Of course! I fulfill sticker orders - usually a couple a week - within a day or two. I have a feeling that many members don't even realize that we have a merchandise store where we have three different stickers that you can put on your truck to show your support for the site. Check em out! Now, there have been some constructive suggestions made in this thread. Some dealing with how the forums are divided up by year, some about how many posts a member should have before he can post in the For Sale section. These are all good suggestions - and I will be taking them into consideration. I'd love to hear any other suggestions for how we can make the site better - I'm all ears. Jeff [email protected]
I want to quote this Getting Around (The rules and stuff, navigation? ToyotaNation calls it "The Rules") Introduce Yourself! "Don't forget the pics!" (section for new members) Stout "These were compact?! Hilux 2WD "The Granddaddy of them all!" -years split up Hilux 4WD "Where haven't they been?" -years split up Hilux Surf "Because beds are overrated.. sort of" -2wd -4wd Engine Talk (We could do it in the Hilux section, but since engines are really broad, we can break it off) -R Series talk -VZ Series talk -Diesel Talk -Engine Swaps! "Whether you're sick of the factory engine or wanted to experiment, why not swap?!" How-To Tech Section Show and Go! (Section made for photos, vids, all of that. Basically the audio visual stuff, ya know? where we can share that stuff. ToyotaNation has it as "Show and Share".) Toyota News! (ToyotaNation doesn't have NewsBot, that's up to you guys, but generally TN has members contributing the news and rumors) General Discussion! (I also took this cue from TN, basically what it means, General Discussion about cars and trucks, etc.) Off Topic! (ANYTHING non-automotive related? This seperates it from General Discussion really. and please use NSFW tags.... seriously. If I'm mod, I'll make a dedicated NSFW thread for you all.... ) as suggestion cause I like it .. I don't like the way the regional was divided so not bothering to repost... just make a generic events .. people know how far they are driving if people but like kansas city mo/dy/year as thread title.
I've been a member of TM for almost 2 1/2 years and I like this site. ToyotaMinis is the best forum I've been on, everyone gets along, there's no bs, no drama. But what maybe some of you are not realizing is everyone is gonna have a complaint about something, nothin's perfect. Is that any reason to start a new site? Why can't we make this one that much better. We asked for an event section, Jeff came through. We asked for decals, Jeff came through. I asked Jeff if we could have our own decals made, and he said that was cool. I had some made last year and a few members bought 'em. Basiclly, anything we've asked of Jeff, he's come through. It might take him a little bit, but he's got a life just like everyone on here.
Good point NVERNUFEDGE, I love this site as well and do think it needs to be cleaned up. How many posts a member should have before he can post in the for sale section is a good idea. Also i do remember that we were trying to come up with different merchandise to buy with the TM logo on it but havent heard back on if we are going to do it or not. Im all about staying here instead of switching, to many good people and write ups and how to's, to just throw it away.
damn this did get long... anyways i dont think there needs to be a new site, this ones good it just needs some organization and active moderators... buuuttt if another forum pops up that deals with my generation truck im down to join, doesnt mean i'll leave here.
If you kinda looked at the way I set it up, I set it upon the most important things first, then the lesser stuff last. This helps improve focus on the truck stuff, which is what we look at first. then the bottom stuff is for the people who wanna look at other things than just the trucks. I forgot to add a section for ETC vehicles lol. But no biggie. ANYWAY I love you Jeff, no homo. I hope you read this <<<<< Anyway, I love this site too, its steady, we all make progress, and we are keeping together. You also have to admit Jeff definitely DID make progress on the site itself. I appreciate all the members that contribute to the forum, and that's everyone. Without everyone here, its nothing. Course we've lost a few here and there, but push the problems aside and we are all either Toyota Hilux enthusiasts or someone that I referred to here because they needed help on their truck. Thanks Craigslist for letting me tell people to go here because their hilux has a bad timing chain or what not.
Ok, so I'm going to start a new thread with a checklist of things to work on with the site. Everyone should submit their suggestions in that thread. Understand that I won't be acting on everyone's suggestions. I've been building Internet forums for about 10 years and I have a pretty good insight as to what works and what doesn't. So, if I don't use your suggestion, don't be offended.
im glad to see Jeff on here listening to us and we might have taken this a bit far lol i personally really care for this site and members and i really want to see it succeed but just like others have said if another site is made i will definitely show my support for both sites
i would like to say, no problems what so ever with jeff or his performance. im glad he still pays the bills, and maintains the site. like ive always bi+ched, its the way the site is organized. i like most of the people here, know the info is here, but its hard to find. its a problem of to many category's. just try searching "spark plugs" for example. find 300 post's by 300 different users, all asking the same thing in 5 different category's, so a guy with a 85 doesnt read the thread somebody just answered 5min ago for a different year that uses the same parts. if it was me i would organize it like www.ratsun.net and assign some new mods. but this isnt my site. i think a few got the horse before the wagon. i did not receive one email, and discussion should not of happened on here of a new site. just not cool. please dont mis-interpret my offer to jump ship, i want improvement however it happens. but i would still be in the same situation as jeff... ill set it up and give you control, dont sink the ship and sail it long enuff to get home. ill now let this thread get back to what it should be. a thread on how you "most active users" want to fix the site or help
