So Im getting kinda tired of the gauge cluster that is in my 90 Toyota, you know the omega huge speedo with the temp and fuel.. Anywho, I want to put the Cluster with the all the gauges in it. Thus my question, will that plug right into my stock harness and everything work, or do I have to hook up the sensors for the other gauges?
Yes it will but their is some small issues. First make sure what kind of speedometer you got, is it cable driven or is it electronic meaning wire driven. Look at the end of the transmission and look for a speedometer cable. Next you can use a V6 instrument cluster but you have to calibrate the tachomoter for the 4cyl which is easy since Toyota has a built in variable resistor you adjust with on the back of the tachomoter. Last is make sure BEFORE you hook up the instrument cluster is to change the oil pressure sending unit with a gauge type sending unit since it will blow out your oil pressure gauge. Let me know if you need one and which one. Their is a write-up on Yotatech in how to calibrate your tachomter for the 4cylinder. Look under SR5 cluster and read the posts. James
So if I hooked up an aftermarket tach, where would I splice the tach wire into? I looked but couldnt really find anything out. It was easy with my Astro Van, because there was a wire coming off the dist. that was labeled tach, pretty straight forward, but Im not sure with my 1990 Toyota.
Beside the coil is a device called an ignitor..find the yellow wire and tap into it. Run the otherend through the firewall and install a ring terminal on that end. Then the screw you need to connect it to is directly behind the "0" on the tach. Took me no more than ten mins to get it up and running. To adjust the tach I borrow a tach from a buddy and hooked it same way to see what i was idling at. To adjust the tach you have to take off the clear cover and speedo. from there peek behind the top right side of the tach. You will see a little white screw (adjustment). Take a philips screw driver and turn it until it matchs the revs on the other tach. BTW I have a Electronic Tach and willing to swap with some one that has a cable version. Its got about 103k for miles.
I'm lost in what you are trying to do. Are you trying to put a factory SR5 gauge cluster in or do you want to add aftermarket gauges to what you have now? You can add a tach to your truck just make sure that the selector is set to 6 cylinder. James
Well I wouldnt mind putting an SR5 cluster in my truck, but for now I was just gonna hook up an after market tach that I had laying around from my old Safari. I was just curious where I would splice into to hook up the aftermarket tach. I dont have a V6 either, just a good old 22r. My speedo is also cable driven, when it gets cold outside it tends to act a little crazy. Just trying to get some info before I go off and buy a cluster. I was told that it was just a matter of just hooking it up, but I kind of figured there was a little more to just hooking it up.
I had a Auto-Meter tach on my 88 model Toyota that had the 22r engine & all I did was use the green, black & I think white lol. Basically I wired up one for power, one for ground & I ran one to the ingintion coil-(the positive side). I have the SR5 cluster in my 91 & I love it!
sorry I am not sure what they were but I had a few diff ones with tachs. but someone left them out side and they got messed up from it raining every day.. so I chucked them today
I have some clusters. They are for the V6 trucks but they will work for 4 cylinders. Their is a screw in the back of the tach you can adjust. I got to know if it is cable driven speedometer and if it is auto or manual. James
eBay v6 so needs adjusting http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-9...008QQitemZ180276317615QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW v6 again... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PICK...023QQitemZ360079297669QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW still v6 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-9...016QQitemZ260274795151QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW dam all v6 on fleebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1990...021QQitemZ310075172167QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW found two more on eBay but all were v6... tough to find one that is a 22r...
You do not have to have one from a 22R. On the back of the tach is a screw and you can adjust it for the 4 cylinder engines!!! Here is the link that tells you how. Remember this is for the 89-95 trucks. The older style I think you have to take out a resistor and solder in a new one. http://www.yotatech.com/f116/how-convert-sr5-dash-pictures-102656/ James
