a few days ago, my timing chain starting making a noise(loose or something). i haven't messed with it yet because i had to order the kit and am waiting for it.( no, i'm not driving it around like this either!) my oil light started going off and on shortly after i heard the noise. will a f'ed up timing chain cause my oil light to go on? i did an oil change earlier today to see if that would have an effect on the light going off and on. i only ran it for about 2-3 minutes after the oil change and the light still came on. it wasn't low or too full of oil.
A worn timing chain wouldn't cause the oil light to come on and off, sounds more like an oil pressure problem and the timing chain tensioner isn't keeping the chain tensioned making the chain rattle, I would look more into oil pump problems and not enough oil pressure.
so installing a new tensioner would fix the timing chain problem(considering the timing chain is loose)? the kit i ordered has one, so im good to go in that department.. as for the oil pump problems.. would you recommend me changing out the oil pump first to see if this solves the problem?
i know sometimes when the oil pressure is low the rocker arms click personally i would check the oil pressure and see if that's the problem.
i just ran it. i don't here a click in the rocker arms. just the timing chain rattling. and the light didn't come on for the 3-5 minutes it was running idle. when the light was coming off/on, it was almost instant when idling but not today. would having too much oil in it make the light come on? whats the most effective way to check the oil pressure? sorry for the newbie questions, im just starting to do all the work myself rather than get reamed by some joe schmoe shop.
CHANGE YOUR OIL PUMP first!!!! if you want to see it yourself drop your oil pan take out your timing cover and look at your timing chain guides and tensioner. your oil pump is located behind your crank pulley on the timing cover.
The oil pumps can crack & do lose the seal, either one can cause a loss of pressure. Throw a LC high volume pump in while your in there, much higher pressure, better oiling! If you have the money to do ,also their double row timing chain, worth the money,& stronger parts!!
could this result in an oil leak as well? i just noticed that on the [passenger] side of the engine, there seems to be a little oil leak. i'm just gonna install a stock oil pump for now. im planning on a swap later down the road so i don't wanna invest a chunk of money into the 22re. just enough to keep it in top shape for the mean time.
The 22RE is a great engine, & you pull a lot of power out of it!! And yes, when I had a leak in a earlier engine, it was a small crack in the casing ,cased by a worn chain!
When replacing the timing chain it's always a good idea to replace the oil pump and the water pump, since everything is already apart.
You might aswell drop the pan and clean out the pick up tube screen. You might find bits and peices of the timing chain guides.
