I own a 87 pickup and it has some major rus damage... anywhere you can think of it most likely has it... I want to know if I should keep the truck and work on it or should I try looking for something better... If I should keep it should I work on it myself or should I take it to a shop... and if i take it to a shop how much will that go for.. Sorry about all the Qs but I really need help with this. I appreciate any help. the major rust areas are the bed on both the sides... the rust starts exactly half way down the bed all around the bed... another is the rocker panels these are just gone. the rest is just here and there on the bed. I hope some one can really help me with this
do it your self... shop will be way too much. I would try and buy a new bed before I tried fixing a rusted out one..
I dont and am not a professional body man, but, I do know this, we all start somewhere. Get yourself a cheapy fender or crapola body part and practice on that. Hell, there are even bodywork videos all over out there. Once you do it a few times ( mistakes included ) youll soon learn from them and get better and better. Practice makes perfect man. . .
a bed swap would only take even the most inexpeirienced mechanic 3hrs. there are only 6-8 bolts 1 plug and the gas filler neck and you and a buddy can lift it off the truck.
. . . agreed! One thing to add, kind of a note to self, spray the hell outta the bed bolts with breakfree or liquid wrench a few days before to help in avoiding knuckle busters. Also, use an air wrench, sockets and wrenchs are gay for this project . . .
hey lif you still looking for a bed I have a couple including a fiberglass bed I'm in new hampshire Later SSB
ok dude... here ya go... first off, how is the frame? any frame rot and you got a parts truck. if the frame is solid how is the cab? not the fenders or the bed, just the cab, you said the "rockers" are gone... if thats the cab under the doors, like i said parts truck basically if the frame and or cab are rotted it's not worth it... find a new truck, there are plenty. if it's just the bed and fenders then that's easy and if you get lucky and find a decent bed not already rotted just like yours then your really doing good... GOOD LUCK! PS any chance you want to buy: a fiberglass bed 4wd style a steel bed 2wd style a 93 2wd 22re standard cab truck or an 87 4wd 22rte truck all in NJ....
