I have an 86 toyota 4x4 that I'm building into a mud toy. It has 36" Ground Hawg's on it, I cut out the bed between the fender well's and put in expanded metal, I built a rack in the bed to hold dual batteries, fuel cell, and dual radiator's, etc, etc... The truck has a transplanted 20R under the hood. I am ( assuming ) I need to adjust my float level. I put a new fuel pump on it and I filled up a 20oz coke bottle with gas and ran a hose to the inlet of the fuel pump, then I ran a hose from the outlet of the fuel pump to the carb. When I hit the key it will suck the coke bottle empty in seconds and squirt gas out the top of the carb. After it sucks the bottle dry and it doesn't start, I let it sit for like five minute's and hit the key and it will start up rather roughly, but get humming nicely until all the gas in the carb is gone, which takes a few minute's. Am I right in assuming my floats need adjusting? If so, how do I do it? I see the sight glass on the front of the carb, but there is no obvious adjust ment screw's that I see. Any help would be appreciated. I am 33 and have alway's wanted to build a Toyota mud truck, now that I have one I am plucking away at it little by little every weekend, and the fuel pump/carb adjustment was this weekend's project but the carb has got me stumped!! lol Anyway, thank's again. BTW I tried looking this up on the site before I bothered posting a thread about it! :)

The float level in the carb shouldnt need adjusted because the engine is transplanted to a newer chassis, only if it is out of adjustment regardless of what its in. The fuel level in the carb, at idle with a good supply of fuel should be about center of the sight glass, to adjust the float level the top of the carb needs to come off and the actual float itself is adjusted by bending a small metal tang that rides against the needle on the needle/seat, I don't have the specs handy to tell you what the measurment is, or if the adjustment is done vertical, horizontal, inverted, or what.
When you filled the bottle and turned the pump on and said it sucked the bottle dry and squirted out the top of the carb, shouldn't do that, thats probably why it takes so long afterwards to start it, its flooded big time, the fuel should fill the float bowl to the correct level and the needle should shut off the flow, if its squirting out the top either the needle is not closing, worn badly, stuck, or your fuel pump has too much pressure.
Sounds like a fun project, good luck with the build.:waytogo:

Thank's NOOK for the info. When I got the truck it had the 20R in it and it looked like somebody took a hammer to the old carb, so I won a 20R carb off of ebay for like $140. Carb look's brand new. Installed it, only to find that the fuel pump didn't work. So back to ebay, won a fuel pump for $25, installed it, carb flood's, you know the rest. I will do what you say, thank's for the reply. Zack
