i'd be interested in one for my hilux.. i've tried to clean it up and paint it but it still looks like crap :D

oh and in that link they discuss the legality of the reproduction.. i think it would be fine. i can order a new blank tag for my 66 mustang from several vendors. pretty much the same thing.

Funny this topic has come up.

Last week I was about to purchase one. Unfortunately the truck had not been registered since 1978 and for the life of me could not find any vin #'s on the body. A body style # inside the cab, yes. But no vin.

Although there was one on the frame on the driver's side, which can be seen just between the front of the wheel and fender. (My 72' Hilux has a legible vin # on the door jam tag, engine bay tag, and etched into the frame.)

I just registered a vehicle (non-Toyota) that had been out of the system since the mid-80's. Unless they can locate a matching vin # in (3) different locations, they won't put it back in the system. At least this was the case at the DMV in Fremont, Ca. Fortunately, the 74' Triumph Spitfire I brought in had all three; engine bay, dash plate, and frame.

Now, I am told there are some DMVs, typically in rural areas of California, that are less strict in these kinds of situations. But please note, this is just what I have been told and have yet to try it myself.

Then you guys have it a lot easier there, than we do, here. Lady inspecting my vehicle wouldn't sign off on the form till she found a third. Then again, she might have been having a bad day...
