what i'd like to know is if anyone has swapped out a 3:07 third out of a 2wd (5lug) axle housing for a 4:10 third out of a 4wd (6lug) rear axle housing?

i am almost positive its been done but somewhere someone mentioned that the 4:10 ring gear would not clear the housing on the 2wd.....????

    can someone confirm this??

i dunno, but i have 4.10s in my truck stock. i always heard that the 4 speed trucks had tall gears and the 5 speeds had shorter.

    IDK about 3.07s but...

I know a 4.10 2wd diff can be replaced by a 4.10 4wd diff. It is a tight, only comes out one way, fit.

ive been wanting to find a 3.73 set for my truck. 3.07 would have no balls at all. but a 3.73 would make a more usable 1st gear and 5th would be more freewayable. i dont have a w58, so its more needed with the 4.10s and 195/70/14s

The gear ratios don't matter... As long as both 3rd's are "G" code they'll drop right in... Same goes for "F" and "T" codes...

Only the "IRS" 3rd's are not a drop in deal... But, you can use the ring and pinion gears from them. I'm not 100% sure about using the LSD carrier tho...

*On a side note: 4:10's did not mesh well with the W58 in my opinion...

I have 3.73s now, 4.10s would suck big time on the highway. I really liked my 3.58's

so, taking the IRS/solid thing into consideration, ive also heard that the older g codes (78 and back style) dont accept the later 3rd members. i cant verify this. id like to just drop a new third in my housing. but if i have to narrow a newer style ill figure something out. i dont care about LSDs i just want 3.7s
