can someone tell me what this is for and what it does

 

its a breather for the valve cover. they ysually suck air from the air cleaner. this is cleaner looking.

 

They don't suck air. The valve cover developes pressure from blow by gases. Usually there are hoses running to the intake tract to recycle these blow by gases. These filters are only keeping oily gas from spraying all over the bottom of your hood.

Any little filter will do. There are no specific filters, pretty much swap them between any engine.

 

by bad. your right, they blow it outward. but yeah, i ran without one for a while and i always had gunk on my valve cover and hood. i washed it off, and ran the little one from spectre (schucks/orileys has them). i didnt need to make the hole larger, i just shoved it on there. put a little oil on the post of the valve cover. get two, and put another on the pcv valve at the rear.
