I have a 75 Hilux and am going to swap in a W58 tranny. I did this swap on my 76 Celica and since the mount on the W58 is a little farther back I had to use a tranny mount from an 85 auto supra. Has anyone done this swap on their Hilux? And if you did, what did you use for a tranny mount for the W58? Thanks.
i was just looking at doing this since my 78s w50 burned up. what i noticed is the 22R celicas that had a W58 had a nearly identical overall length and shifter placement. slave cylinder may be the same too. input shaft is for sure. but for the mount, what i am planning to do is make a cut on each side of the area it mounts to. to remove the center area from the crossmember. then attach it to the new tranny when its lifted up into place and use a jack to support to where the bottom edge of the crossmember lines up again. tack it in a few spots. release the jack to make sure its okay, take the pressure back off and fully weld the rest. would need a slight gusset to cap the open ends off. but if you were to leave space for some 1/8" plate between them you could have it extend out to work properly front to back to cap the ends. then trim down the edges and grind it smooth. im not sure if this totally makes sence. look at how front suspensions are Z'd and think of it that way. only front to back not top to bottom. summery: cut the center out, move it back, weld it up. lol. and if you are very low like me, then i would suggest trimming the input shaft about half an inch and regrinding that little taper in they have for install. keep it from bottoming out into the tail section. thats what did mine in i think. caused all the oil to leak out the back. but, when i say really lowered i mean a longbed thats dropped about 8/7" front/rear
My '82 came with a W42 4 speed. When I put on the W58 I had to use the tranny mount bracket support from a '92 2wd that had a W55. It fit perfect! Before that I had a modified celica bracket and a '90 auto bracket here's some pics for reference. I don't have a pic of the '92 bracket but looking at the pics you'll know how it measures up. Original W42 on the left and '90 2wd Auto (A43D) on the right. The '92 (W55) bracket was right in between these two as far as measurments are concerned... Here's what i did to make the auto bracket work... Here is the chopped up celica box style bracket... ghetto fabulous! But it worked... *The '92 bracket fit perfectly, no cutting or drilling! I didn't even have to cut the floorboard for the shifter. No modifications to the driveshaft either!
i actually just got done puttin a 58 in my 77 everything went together perfect the only thing i had to do was mod the tranny cross member i cut the center out and moved it back 1.75 inchs here are a couple pics so you can see what i did oh and i had to cut the hole for the shifter a couple of inchs as well
not on mine i didnt relize that i got one that is computer controlled so i need to find the gear that takes the cable
