From my experience with toyota it could be your alternator either not grounded well therefore not charging or only charging some of the time, or the alternater is on it's way out. This happened to me and my buddies 85 corollas. But be sure to check your brake fluid regularly until you figure it out, one of my buddies thought the had brake switch was loose on his 86 toyota pickup and ignored it for 6,000 miles and then he brakes went completely out:meemee:

I also had this problem in my 4x4. Mine had a bad alternator, a bad battery cable and one bad battery clamp. It even did have the brake light on with it, so if I were you, I'd have all of them checked, moreso if there's corrosion on the positive post.

brake light + alt light = just about every toyota ever's "oh snap my alt is toast" dummy light.

before you throw parts at it, check with a multimeter, or go to a parts store and have em test it in the car, then take it out and test on the bench.

look for frayed wires at the connector on the batt, and back of alt.
