Hello I am new to this forum and I am taking a 71 Hilux and putting in a 22 and 5 spd .. lots to do. If anyone has tried this help would be appreciated .. this is not easy. I have a pic of the cab back on the frame with 22r and 5spd in it but there are some clearance issues. If anyone has some recomendations please let me know. Thanks david
Welcome to the site! Check out Seths site & look under the projects section on the forums page...youll find that hes working a late model truck like yours. http://www.twistedminis.com
check out my wagon build. its the same suspension and running gear as a hilux, just a unibody. really all you'll need is the engine mount (from block to chassis) from a 76-76 hilux, but your 18rc mounts might work. i never tried mine. the only hiccups i see coming are the driveline. good news is you have about 12 years of toyota's to hunt through at junkyards to find a bolt in driveshaft, or having one shortened or legnthened isnt to bad. the other hiccup is me assuming you have a hydraulic manual already oh ya, welcome. if you still have the old motor can you post a pic for refrence?
THe truck came without an engine or tranny when i bought it last month but stock form came with 18rc and 4spd
Also the problem I am running into is that there is only 2" between the waterpump pulley and the radiator and there is only a 9" space on the other side so cooling is my main issue to over come. Any suggestions???? thanks again
ive been having a similar issue with my wagon, the extra pulley makes the stock fan impossible to use. i ended up going with a newer (97+) bmw 2 speed pusher fan on the front of the radiator. it has a 17in dia blade and is only 3 3/4in deep. not to thread jack you so ill post pics of it in a sec in my wagon thread. you may be able to get a ford taurus (old robocop style) electric fan to fit as well. its a 2 speed reversable fan. or if nothing else works, maybe a couple random small fans on front and back of the radiator.
went different route .. 3rc instead of 22r i decided to go a different route and bought a 3rc for 120 .. was stored in a guys garage and was removed from a jeep ??? as the story went. engine is clean for its age and was in good running condition when it was removed from the jeep..i went this route because i wanted an engine that would fit into the engine bay without any major clearnace issues and i find that the 3rc is a better built engine then the 18 or 8 rc engines ..less moving parts for the timing setup.. I have removed the original engine mounts and the tranny mount has to be completely reworked because the 5 spd that i have mated to the 3rc is way different in the mounting clearances, but the stick is really close to the original hole, one more reason to go withthe 3rc... the 3rc engine is not long like the r series engines and does not have cleareance issues for cooling. i have posted under 3rc mating to 5spd pics of tranny and here are some of the cab and frame disassembled and mounts removed
