i know there is a way to decode the vin, but i cant remember if its posted somewhere on the net or if its in a book i got.

ill get back to you on this.

in the mean time search google, the build plate will have all the info of the trucks parts. much easier to find that info as well.

if you find a good place plz post it here.

what i dont get is why?

theres a build plate on that truck, either in the door jamb or eng bay.

it will list the model number, eng, tranny, color and option codes, ect.

    what more do you need?

what numbers dont match the truck?

these are not american cars, there is no way to get a matching numbers motor. it just didnt happen that way. there is no known way to tell what vehicle a motor was built in.

the best guess on the interweb is that the casting numbers on the block/head/tranny are simply sequential. there is no added info you can get.

so trying to decode the vin to see if its the original motor is a waste of time. trust me.

the build plate WILL say what motor is supposed to be in there. its either a 22re or a 3vz then you have either a W, G, or A series tranny with either a F or G code rear.

once you look at your build plate and find out whats in the truck you can easily find gearing info on the web.

your really trying pretty hard to find info you already have.

if you dont belive me i can show you the build plate from my 75 truck and the casting # off the original motor, or the same info off either of my celica's. then you will see that there are no matching numbers toyotas, nor have there ever been.

note: some newer motors will have a sticker on them that states the vin number on the timing cover. its a barcode so the dealer can just scan then print out the correct parts. as far as i know and have heard they didnt do that until the 2rz came out (96ish)

how did they know what they were putting in what truck? i assumed that was the key how all manufactures kept track of whats what when they produce the vehicle.

I belive im going to have to get a new motor soone any way. the truck has developed a tick in the motor. cant tell if its the valves or a rod bearing. sounds like its coming from the rear of the motor. is this typical to a 22re

You sure it's not an exhaust leak or is it more of a tick? They do need valve adjustments once in awhile especially if it's a newer motor.

the motor looks like it all stock i know it has a new clutch. its not an exaust leak its loud and quiets down when the truck warms up. i checket it out some more and it seams like it in the head should i check the valves first of check timing or do plugs wires n c what happens. truck has 176,000 on it.
