I just bought an 82 toyota 4x4. It has a tired 22r in it and I'd like to replace it. I want to find a direct swap. I've found a few early 80's toyota cars. Would the engine's from these cars be a direct swap? I want to stick with a carburetor so I don't have to bother with the wiring crap right now. What are my options?
technically....... yes, you can use just about any 22r block on your truck. the head intake system should all bolt up to eachother as well within the 22r's. if you are gonna use a later block, make sure to use all your original intake and carbureator parts when transfering over. if you use a later carb and intake off another truck, it will be different because of the varying emissions crap they used through the years. so to answer your questions simply. yes, you can use a 22re motor and yes..... just put your manifold on it.
I have a good 82 22r from a celica that is a direct bolt in for your truck, I would like $500 for it. Your intake manifold won't fit on a newer EFI 85 and up head or a 83 or 84 head for that matter. I'm located in Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474, where are you located?
not entirely correct. the later (+84) motors have a different bolt pattern for the intake, so your early intake will not bolt up. your carb will. you may have to jimmy rig some of the emissions mounting to the motor like the air pump. you can source a new motor from any celica, corona, or pickup from 75-85 and up to 95 on the pickups. would also reccomed a weber instead of the stock crap, and i mean crap.
Are you sure the intake pattern is different? I swapped an '86 carbed intake onto an '83 and it bolted right up. I think I had to switch a stud to a bolt, though. It might have been one of those oddball really late '83s that ended up with the '84 engine??? I know the exhaust side is different.
i suppose i should clairify a bit more then. "your pre-83-84 carb'd intake will not bolt up to a 84+ EFI head" as far as i know the head and the ports are the same, its just some of the stud holes were not drilled or tapped for a carb'd model on a efi motor. same goes for a late carb'd motor, your missing stud holes for EFI
Cool, thanks for all of the info! I think I found a pretty honest guy with a rebuilt 20r for sale for 500$ So I'll most likely swap that in. Who knows though, the motor might be junk. A 20r is a direct swap correct?
ya it will bolt right in as well. but again the intake is different, and you have to mod a bit to use your carb. but either way i would get a weber, which can mount to just about anything.
If you get the intake with the 20r, LCengineering sells a 22rcarb-20r intake adapter for somewhere around $25.
Cool, the 20r should be here monday! It's supposed to be totally rebuilt and good to go. The guy has had it sitting for three years but he said he turns it over and sprays wd-40 in the cylinders every once in a while. What should I look for to make sure it's good? I was going to have the guy meet me at my mechanics, hopefully my mechanic can tell me if it's good.
3yrs its might start to seep fluids everywhere. be fine for a month or so, and a few months down the road will be leaking more. i find it hard to believe the gaskets havent dried up by now.
Well heck! Alright I guess it's back to hunting down a 22re,manifold, and carb... dang it. Maybe I'll sell it as is and pick up an 85!
I found a 1984 celica gt-s with 165000 miles on it. The owner says it runs like a top... This should have a 22r in it correct?
