Hey im new here go check out my introduction, What should we do about the fuel system I know stock won't handle 500hp. So what can we do? The stock pump is in side the tank but I would like to run an aeromotive a1000 pump or the like and some 3/8" lines but what do I do about the stock pump?
Remove it. When you pull the tank, the pump will be mounted on the pickup bracket. Take the whole thing out, measure it up, have the tubing upgraded with bigger, and install a new pickup tube with strainer in place of the pump. Or get a fuel cell.
No offense, but this a pretty ambitious project for someone who doesn't know what an in-tank pump looks like.... You have some research to do. Pics should be easy to find on the interweb. To answer- No, you can't use the stock pickup with an external pump. The stock pickup and strainer are part of the stock pump, you have to remove the pump and replace that section with tubing and a new strainer. Another option is to swap in a pickup from a carb truck, with no in-tank pump. For a 1JZ, however, you should be able to use a good hi-performance in-tank replacement pump, like a Walbro. The A1000 is good, but it's overkill.
No reason to be a smart ass I was only asking if you knew of any pics of the replaced pump and strainer setup, I know what the stock one looks like. I don't like to go blind into a project if someone has a setup that works I will just copy it. Oh and I can search all day but if I still don't find the pics or write up that im looking for I am going to ask. Im a newb here so please lay off.
No offense but he answered your questions. It would probably be more constructive to thank the man and do some searching rather than post a reply like that. If you're looking for a setup for a 1jz, I'd check supraforums.com, supramania.com, and supracharged.com. They usually have some pretty good write-ups, but it'll take some searching. Hybridz.com would probably have something, too. Most of it's not toyota, but they have a bunch of engine swaps with good write-ups. A lot of hot-rod sites also. Search.
Hey, I just stumbled onto this writeup- fuel pump comparisons There's good info about injector sizes, flow vs psi, and some different options besides the brand names. There's little reference to hp vs pump choice, but good stuff anyway. Scotty, if your JZ is destined for big power, it looks like your A1000 is good insurance over an in-tank pump. If it's running around stock (or slightly warmed over) you just need a good in-tank replacement.
Here you go this is the stock pump bracket, with pump in place, there is a strainer on the bottom not in photo. I run a Vemon pump is 20% high on output, cost less than a stock pump! Recently I had to lengthen the bracket to set the pump lower in the tank( custom made,12" deep.
