I was just at a friend of mines shop and he has a old 22r he said I could have.

I noticed it had a duel timing chain and round exhaust ports so it must be a pre 85. The motor mounts appear to be the same on my current motor.

I have a 92 pickup 22re. Is it possible to put the newer style fuel injected head on a old block?

i don't think it will work on pre 85 blocks, something about the deck height.

    well that sucks.

How can I tell the difference between a old 22r and a 20r? Do I have to pull off the intake manifold and look at the intake ports, or is there another way?

The older head flows better and can potentially make more power than the new style. The EFI manifold will not bolt on without seriously modding the head, manifold, or both. It has been done though. The easiest thing to do is go carb on the old engines. Another option would be to adapt a junkyard TB injection setup to a carb manifold and run it with Megasquirt.

Read through the tech info here, and you too will be a 22R guru.

You can do it but you will have to get a 83-84 head that has enough bolt holes for the EFI. I can't remember but I can go out in the shop and count the holes in the heads.
