Does anyone know what that nasty black crap is in the 22RE throttle body? Is it backdrafted oil from that hose where a breather would plug in?

It is in fact blow by from the crankcase ventilator. As part of the emissions, the engine burns this so that it doesn't land on the ground or go airborne.
There are ways to eliminate this "green" option though....

Would a breather clear that up? if so, what should I cover the hole on the intake manifold with?

Eventually, I'll track down a breather and bypass cap to prevent that crap. I'm losing enough oil as it is...

What I plan on doing on mine is run a compressor oil separator and a fuel filter inline. That way the PCV is still connected and functioning but all that crap isn't getting blown down the intake.

Good idea. Post a pic whenever you do it, some of us may just try that.

I liked the idea, but it wasn't mine. I saw in on an S10 forum. I can't find my bookmark but I did a google search for "catch can" when I found it.
