Hi everyone, I’m looking for a detailed workshop repair manual for my vehicle. Ideally, it should cover step-by-step instructions, wiring diagrams, troubleshooting tips, and maintenance schedules. I’ve tried a few generic manuals, but they often lack depth or clarity. I’m particularly interested in something easy to follow for both routine maintenance and more complex repairs. Do any of you have recommendations for manuals that are accurate, up-to-date, and practical for hands-on work? Bonus if they include illustrations or digital versions. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!
The absolute best manual is, naturally, the Factory Service Manual (FSM) as used by Toyota dealer service departments. Unfortunately, I don't know if dealers still sell them. I know that FSM no longer exist for new (after 2015) cars since the FSM are now all on-line and by subscription (purchased through dealers) only. Toyota may have retroactively digitized ALL of their FSM, in which case you can probably find a used one on ebay or some used book stores. The FSM for my 1988 pickup is about 1.5 inches thick and has everything you listed. It even has pages of chassis dimensions (for collision repair) for every variant (standard, long bed, extra cab, long bed extra cab, four runner, etc.) of the chassis. The second best WAS the Haynes manuals, UP TO A CERTAIN YEAR. Up to the late 70s or early 80s, Haynes manuals were almost as good as the FSM. Some used actual pages and photos from the FSM. They initially were very model/year specific but they became less so. For example, in 1979, I could buy a Haynes manual specifically for 1978-79 Celicas. Some years later, the only Haynes manual i could find was for 1972-1986 Celicas. Maximizes profits for them but useless for me. Unless a new publishing company popped up in the last few years that i am not aware of, everything else is junk....
