I have a 94 Pickup 2wd 22RE 5spreed.Just purchased a couple days ago. Starter has sounded funny since i test drove it. It will start so pretty sure it is not the "clicking issue" that many have experienced. To me it sounds like the starter is not fully engaging with the flywheel. It has started every time with a "kinda" grinding sound. I removed the starter and there is some wear on starter and fly wheel. More on the starter. Im very new to the Toyota's so wondering if yall had a recommendation for a starter. Or just any run of the mill starter is fine? it had a carquest on it and it looked to have some age. Thanks in advance.

Clean or replace the bendix, maybe a new solenoid and contacts. If the shaft the bendix rides on is worn the bendix won't be able to travel to fully engage the ring gear. Best to clean and freshen the lube. If the bendix gear is worn it won't fully engage the ring gear. Either way, you don't want to continue using the starter or the ring gear can get eaten away.

Another issue can be worn ring gear teeth.

Doesn't look like you would have any issues with that ring gear.

    How's the starter issue going?

I just replace the starter with a rockauto cheap BBB starter. Noise /grinding is gone starts fine. Just fyi on the BBB starter can not snap the cover on the hot wire where it bolts on. The stud is too long i wasnt paying attention and tried to snap it together and it broke off the plastic cover.
