Man no fun. Good learning experience though. At least you have thrown a rod or anything yet.

Damn dude.. that sucks. You were right at the finish line! Smh. But then again, it's better to fix it now that all parts are complete, then running it like that and possibly throwing a rod out the side.. good luck with diagnosis!

At this point my workbench has been converted back to a woodshop now.

I've got some furniture comissions I am repairing and will see how i feel after i finish them whether I want to go back to engine work or 'give up' and have a shop do the build this time.

#4 cylinder seems to have a blown compression ring

I pulled the plugs one by one to push down on the pistons to see if there was any wiggle. All were solid, but while I had the plugs out I did a compression test. #4 was like 25 psi lower than the other cylinders. I squirted some thick gear oil in there, and then it tested fine. I then put everything together, started the engine, and pulled the front valve cover vent hose. The hose pulsed out smoke that smelled like burn gear oil. SO all 3 of those really seem to point to ring failure.

Now I need to pull everything and see what the damage is. How is the piston? How is the cylinder wall? What is the deal?!

:doah:thats not good news, BUT, workable. A new sleeve at worst? Hoping for minimal damage.

Sleeve? If the cylinder is bad, then the piston is probably bad (aluminum vs steel), so maybe time to go .040 over.

Finally putting parts together for a rebuild. Got some on memorial day sale, so I saved a few bucks. The rest of the parts will come when I get the block machined and know what bore and deck I'm dealing with.

Looks like there is a parts shortage going around these days.

Nice! I keep forgetting to check the parts sites for sales on holiday's. But then again there isn't much I want right now as far as performance parts. Been up in the air about a lightweight flywheel but know the oem one is the thing helping lay down the torque. Did pick up a 100 plus piece milwaukee packout socket set because I'm a sucker for that stuff.

Business is hard right now. Less skilled labor working more people buying. Along with the compounding of other things. It's almost cheaper to buy slabs of bamboo then it is normal old plywood.

Even buying a used car right now is bad. Any car that is slightly interesting and could maybe be valuable is being marked up. Been looking out for an is300 and it's kind of ridiculous what people have and want. People think that there automatic beater is worth 7k plus. It's at the point where I might as well find a sport wagon because it's not going to be much more and actually worth it.

You got it this go around though. Take your time and it will be alright. In the down time keep studying all aspects of building an engine. Always be learning and questioning.

Yeah, i am a furniture maker and bike mechanic. 60% of bike parts seem to be unavailable, and lumber prices have doubled. Its rough these days.

Sounds like its a good time to sell my Chevy! Hahaha. Hope to get the toyota up and running before I do that, though.

This time around i'm not going to assume thay anything is OK, i've got a couple local machine shops I have talked to to get work done, but ultimately will assemble everything myself.

Got it broke down to the block, and will be taking that to the machinist tomorrow.

Got things broken down fairly quickly, and gave the block a good scrub.
    Resized_20210608_154808.jpeg

I also decided to wrap the exhaust downpipe. Whatever benefits there may be outweigh the costs it seems.

Plus I think it looks pretty cool, hopefully it functions well.

Sent my turbo out today to get its internals upgraded from a ct20 to a ct26 (supra kinda thang). It should look the same, and most importantly pass smog!

Most other parts are on order, and should be arriving soon. Once I get the pistons in I can have the block bored and surfaced for the pistons and MLS head gasket on their way. 4032 pistons means I should be able to get some tight clearances on the cylinder bores.

While waiting I've made a list of torque specs in order of installation to plot out the build.

Truck's name may be "Betsy", but this engine will be named "Patience" haha.

The only unknown factor right now is fuel injectors. The previous build had no problem with leaning out, so I will see how the new one performs before I up it to 440s or anything. (just had mine fully serviced, so I hope they are still cool!)

for now it is the ol' cleaning game. Getting every part scrubbed and polished, lapping valves, and trying to prevent future oxidation.

Looking at the burnishing on the cylinder walls I think I've found the problem. When the head gasket blew it took me a while to get around to doing anything on the engine, which meant it sat around for a while. While it sat, the milkshaked engine oil pitted my 4th cylinder wall. When I honed it back to a polish, that only honed a pitted low spot where the piston rings couldn't make contact. So I'll bore a little more and get that cylinder back to round at .040" over.

When is all said and done with the bottom and top end work, I hope to be making around 220hp to the driveplate. I hope it doesn't kill my MPG too much!

Good catch. I'm also going .040 over due to ring scratches. Which piston brand did you go with?

22REPerformance turbo forged pistons, the 4032 alloy. Very light weight.

I don't know when my parts will be getting in, so for now I am lapping the valves and trying to keep busy.

After lapping the valves, I did some port work matching the intake manifold to the head.

All parts have been ordered, 3 week lead time for their arrival, so now the patence game is on!

    The plan:
    5mge air box
Ct20 gutted and machined with ct26 internals
    Teflon intake gaskets
    Port matched intake
    Oversized stainless valves
LCE turbo cam, rocker setup, and dual valve springs with Ti retainers
    Block bored .040 over
    MLS head gasket
22re performance forged 4032 pistons and I beam rods
    Reground crankshaft with King bearings
    ARP head and main studs
    LCE cnc exhaust manifold
F.A.S.T. multi spark ignition with boost proportional retard
    2.25" exhaust
A340E with stock toyota ECT and a Transgo reprogramming kit
    B&M pro stick shifter

Should be fun when the time comes
