AFM 22RE. To adjust or not adjust.

    I recently watched an old video stating that it may be recommended to adjust the AFM depending on what performance parts have been added.

    Currently running 292 cam, Hedman shorty headers, and a flowmaster exhaust (no cat).

    Question: Should I adjust the AFM gear to run slightly richer? (Maybe 2-3 teeth)

    Keep in mind I am fairly new to this and am fully aware I may be asking a stupid question :lol::thinking::doah:

    I wouldn't touch it without a wideband to monitor AFR

    That isn't to say that you don't need to. I have mine clocked a couple teeth from stock.

    I've gone as far as 6 teeth past oem specs.. then turned back 2 teeth and it was almost perfect! AFR gauge does add insurance.

    Insurance? Adjusting the AFM without the ability to monitor AFR is like trying to drive with a plywood windshield.

    I know what you mean but a couple of teeth don't change your AFRs drastic enough to have mechanical failure. Not in my experience at the least.

    Wideband will always be better than guessing. With a cam that much more aggressive than stock I would go for a stand alone ECU. The stock ECU will leave you disappointed beyond belief, the tune was never intended for that much cam. If you did decide to keep the stock ECU just adjusting the AFM would not be enough, you'd need to raise the compression, play with the fuel pressure, adjust the timing curve (look for a distributor with mechanical advance and research the mods for that) and do the potentiometer mod in the CTS wire.

    That cam without the proper tuning will be very flat on the bottom end and come to life just about the RPM you should shift. Without corresponding engine mods it's really a waste of time.

    Not that the 22RE is a real performance engine....

    Damn, totally spaced on that cam.. yea that's just under .500 of lift.. I wouldn't even run that cam without dual valve springs and at least flat top pistons. I was referring to stock internals.

    Oh forgot to update this post...I was told it had 292 cams but that's wasn't true at all. When I finally found time to check it out I found the cam to be stock. I believed what I was told based on my lack of knowledge and the fact the engine seemed to rock a bit when throttled. I'm still a noob :shrug:.

    I am assuming that the previous owner had messed with the AFM since it looks like it was resealed and my truck is running really rich. That's a project for another time after I'm done tackling my current electrical issues.

    Well that sucks! If someone has monkeyed with the AFM without documenting what was done it'll be a bear trying to get it back. Unless you want to put the time into it it would be best to get another AFM.

    I'm going to open it up and hope they had the decency to mark the original position. If not, then I'll be searching for a new AFM like you suggested :headbang:
