Just about done swapping the 20R for a 22R. One thing I noticed was the plug for the 22R dist. has two wires (red/white), but the 20R only had the one red wire from the ignitor. I'm assuming I'd connect red/red, but where do I connect the white wire?

Can't you just swap the whole distributor? That is, take the 20R distributor and stick it in the 22R.

Your ignitor has to match your distributor. 20R wiring is not compatible to a 22R distributor.

Good to know. I do have the matching 22R ignitor. Any reason to use the 20R components over the 22R?

I would assume I could do this. I'm not 100% sure about it. This may be my easiest option?

I'll have to double check, but the only wire coming from the ignitor to the dizzy on the 20R setup was a red wire.

I pulled this engine from a '78, so I'm not sure where it originally came from. This is the ignitor that came from it. Unfortunately I don't recall if the two green plugs were connected to anything when it was in the '78 or not. The other wire connects to the dizzy.

Photos of the ignitor on the truck it's going into. The extra red wire on the right goes to an aux battery charging system.

Update: Thanks to jetas, I almost have it figured out. The green plug ( 2 wires - tan & white) on the 22R coil/igniter connect to a known 12V source. The dizzy connects to the coil/igniter like it normally would. It runs.... but

It does fire up when I normally start the engine (START), but as soon as I move the key to (ON) it shuts off. There was a BLK/YEL wire coming from the ignition that I hadn't connected yet. Looking at the 78 wiring diagram this comes from the ignition and connects to the (+) on the coil.

Now it fires up on the (ON), and I'm assuming the starter is also engaged while it's running. I've only let it run for a second, but it does run.

Any idea what the issue could be now? Is the ignition in my truck (77), different from what was in the donor truck (78)?

Regardless, I'm just glad to be making progress on this swap.

I want to say the black and yellow wire is the 12v+ for the ignition

You are correct. Any idea what the issue could be?

Is the starter the same one you had in the truck before? The solenoid could be stuck. Or does it actually sound like the starter is still turning

This is the starter that came from the 22R engine. I'm assuming the 20R and 22R starters are not interchangeable?

It sounds like the starter is still turning.

I put the starter from the 20R onto the 22R block in my truck and it fits and works fine.

Try triggering the solenoid by itself see if it does anything.

A video of this issue would also help

    Small update.

I swapped the 20R start onto the engine and everything is still the same. However, I did figure something out.

That green plug that has the 12V connecting both wires looks like this.

I disconnected the 12v side of the wire to check something.

I forgot to plug it back in when I tried to start the engine and the issue is gone. The engine turns over on the correct key position, and the start will disengage like normal. I'm currently waiting on a coolant hose I ordered so I've only allowed it to run for 10-20 secs but when it arrived I'll get some coolant in the engine and allow it to run longer.

If I disconnect that wire from the green plug, the starter won't turn over. So, any idea how this is working now? Any reason connecting both wires together on that green plug would be a bad idea?

    Thanks guys

Where do the 2 wires go from the green plug? And what color are they?

and what was the 2-1 jumper you have there connected to?

finally came out to look at my ignitor and here are the colors and how they are connected to the harness.

Tan - Ignition Pos+(Goes to coil+ then to the ignitor.
    Yellow -Tach
    Black - Coil Neg-
    White - to distributor
    Pink - to distributor

Cant remember which wire goes which way on the dizzy but itl work one way and not the other

The two wires on that green plug are tan and yellow.

I'll take a look at it and compare it to what you have listed. Thanks!
