Hi All! Going through this late 1972 Hilux and I've discovered the rot beneath the battery tray. Any tips for restoring this area? Common area for rust?

I know I'll have to cut it out and re weld a panel. I've also drawn up some CAD for a new tray.

Thanks! I've definitely heard of Por-15. It is still advised to cut and replace as much as possible?

Pretty common rust area for most vehicles, simply a downfall to battery acid leaking on metal.

PO did a half-assed repair on my truck, which I plan on correcting someday. I'm just going to buy a battery tray, at $10-30 from Summit it's cheaper than my time to fabricate one.

If you use por-15 you have to do the metal prep. either their metal prep or one from eastwood. It's an acid/zinc process that's critical to long term repair. replacing that part is still the best, but at least you can treat the surrounding area with a rust paint.

That's a good option. Does Summit carry something that is specific to the toyota pick up?

I dunno, likely not these older models.
It’s just a simple shelf that you can weld, bolt, rivet, etc to your engine compartment.
Different styles too - like traditional shallow tray with the hold down strap mechanism, to something like the trail gear “box” that’s more of a full cradle for vehicles going off-camber
