Hey all, new to these forums and owning a toyota pickup all together. Just picked up a '76 SR5 longbed yesterday and I'm pretty stoked to have a little project to work on. It'll either need a new battery or alternator as the charge light is on, but the guy I bought it from was saying he thinks its just the connector for the alt that might have a short because he had the alternator replaced and tested and seemed fine. I'll probably pull it out and have it tested someplace to figure that all out. The door seals need replacing and the passenger side window doesnt want to roll all the way up so I'll have to figure that out too, and because of that, water seeped in from rain and theres some rust eating away at the floorboard so I'm gonna pull the mat/carpet up if possible to help dry that out.. No pics of the truck as of yet since I dont have a camera anymore but its got a 20R with a Weber 32/36 and the electric choke is not hooked up, he said all I have to do is hook that wire to a hot wire anywhere on the circuit but I'll have to look more into that. It would be nice to have so I dont have to sit there with my foot on the gas to warm it up, its pretty damn cold up here in the mornings. Welp, I'll see you guys around I guess!
Welcome! Your charge light situation might be like mine had. I had a new battery and multiple alternators and it was always on, but would charge at 14 volts just fine.. I eventually did a Chevy 3 wire conversion and the light never stayed on again.
Hey thanks! I could swear I brought one of my three multimeters here with me when I moved but I didnt so I need to borrow one from my neighbor to check the alternator/battery. So if that was the case for you, was it just a bad charge light relay? I've heard of the GM alt conversion but I dont necessarily know what the benefits are of doing it are.
Honestly, I searched EVERYWHERE for a chg light relay on my truck, I'm convinced that's a joke. I actually think in my case in the end it was the harness plug to the fuse block. It was very corroded and caused more resistance. I pulled it out (2 or 3 bolts in front and a couple big harness plugs on the back) soaked it in vinegar and scrubbed the plugs and it with a little wire brush and didn't have any more problems. Im farely certain it also caused my truck to die going down the freeway multiple times, and random power glitches. Sold the truck not too long after fixing it though, but never heard any problems from the new owners.
