Looking to see what has been done on a 84-88 2 wd pickup as far as drag radials/sticky tires and wider wheels. I know a 27x10.5-15 mt et street or Hoosier quick time will fit. Looking for backspace specs on wheels with 8.8" explorer. Stock width or one side shortened... Anyone???
The 8.8 is frequently mentioned, but I don't think its frequently swapped. Your question might go unanswered until one of very few people happen to come across your post.
I've noticed that. I've seen plenty of drag trucks but no one mentions it or haven't found a single link. Sad
That's because the g code 8" rear axle bolts in and will hold more than most will ever put to it. The supra guys run the stock irs 8" 3rd well into the 700+ HP range. A much lighter pickup isn't going to hurt it any sooner.
I'm going to install an 8.8 from a Fox body mustang with sn95 v6 axle shafts and disc brake setup. I have all the parts just can't have my truck down for the swap right now. It's overkill for the 260hp 1uz that's in my truck at the moment but I will be swapping in a 300hp 1uz this spring. I like the fox body rear because the diff is centered. I considered going with the previa axle with disc's and finding a 7.5 lsd but the ford diff was much cheaper and the 3.08 gears will be nice on the highway. To answer you offset/ backspacing question, an 8" wide wheel is the maximum width you can fit in your stock/ unmolested wheel well/ bedside. The most aggressive offset will probably be 35-45mm (8" wheel) with the explorer axle. I haven't considered the possibility of the inside of the wheel/rim hitting the frame when the suspension flexes.
I'm planning to order custom spec wheels for the truck. I can get any backspace I want in 1/8" increments. It just sucks that its winter here and my garage I full of other ppls car stuff and misc parts. My poor Toyota just sits in the cold for now. I'm thinking of just ordering custom axles at the width I need and shortening the rear. This way I can order std offset wheels with 4 1/2, 5 1/2,6 1/2 offsets or similar. Seeing as I plan to run Chrysler rally wheels as they look similar to stock, ill get the rear cut for stock backspace on a 15x8 stock wheel so their easy to find replacements. Only reason for running the 8.8" is strength as ill be over 650 rwhp with a 4.8l ls, 88mm turbo in the bed, and built turbo 400. I am planning to mount the 1uz engine cover on to to disguise it or the new Tacoma v8 covers.
I hate to say it, but you might have to be the guy that does this mod and posts pics to help the rest of us out
Thats what I'm thinking... Not hard just need to take good measurements. If it wasn't so cold out I'd have all the measurements. I know the widest tire I can fit and tuck is a 27x10.5-15lt m/t et street or Hoosier Quick Time Pro. All I basically need is the center - center measurement of wheelwell. I do have frame dimensions so might be able to figure it out without sitting in the cold too long. Hell... Even a outside leaf spring to outside leaf spring measurement I can figure it out.
Its got the stock rear in it now for reference and measurements to go off of. Just need to take a tire/wheel off and measure from mount flange to outer wheel lip. Its just too damn cold out for that.
So... I got a killer deal on a 99 Mountaineer with a 5.0 and the gt40 heads and intake, 4r70e trans or some shit... All wheel drive, and 8.8" from and rear. $200.00. SCORE!!! Drove the pig home with no issues. 130k on the 5.0l. I was thinking about ripping off the Mountaineer body, z the frame to match the Toyota body and body drop the body on. Keep the complete driveline. But... Because of security, electronics thats a no go. Just going to rip out the engine and rear end and sell/scrap the rest....
