"What's the best setup" is a loaded question. There will be lots of different answers. I've done tons of research and learned a lot over the last few years.

I'd like to get some more specifics from you. Have any pics of the setup? What ECU do you plan to run? What are your power goals? What's your budget?

Currently, I'm putting down around 250 whp at 14 pounds of boost. I daily it, so reliability hasn't been an issue once I got a "good" turbo. Engine reliability has been spot on. When the turbos have failed, I've replaced them with my Patented turbo delete pipe and continued to drive it.

What turbo is it? Do you have a manifold? Do you plan to build the engine?

This can get costly real fast.

Its a Precision gt 40 ball bearing turbo. My motor is all stock. Ive got some money put aside for a few things to be built to hold up. A friend of mine has some head studs and some forged pistons for my motor he said would do good for a turbo setup. I have everything for the turbo kit but its for an integra. The B.O.V and waste gate, intercooler and maube some of the piping i can use ..maybe. i dont have a manifold for it though

True. But I will say that when I built mine, I was planning on running 6-7 psi. Boost is addictive.

Do you happen to know which gt40 it is? The one I'm finding is the gt4088r. It's a really big turbo, and won't be much fun on this engine in its stock form. You might be lucky to even build boost before the factory redline.
It's bigger than my turbo, which is the biggest I've seen on a 22re yet.

By the way. I'm also over at 22RTE-Trucks.com, check it out. There's lots of good info there.

Man that site helped alot. Thought about just finding a rte motor lol some r against it and some love it. Seems the biggest issue was the wiring and some plugs and wiring in a solonoid. But its a swap so its a given lol

I built one from a 22ret block with all n/a 22re internals on a megasquirt ecu, It ran really well on 8psi, then the oil pump failed and killed the motor :( you should do it! its a ton of fun spinning tires at 50mph in a toyota:waytogo:

you can see pics vids and read a little about it Here.

I have a new engine project going on same truck now which eventually I will make a build thread for but its a swap so I sold most the turbo stuff but still have the Megasquirt and some new in the box forged pistons for sale if your interested in any of it.

How does an oil pump fail? There isn't much to it. I guess it could wear the sides of the housing out?

The oil pump I used was the generic china pump that came with the engine rebuild kit. I checked all clearances when the engine was assembled everything looked great. I visually inspected the pump before installing it but didn't check the internal clearances of the pump itself. Everything was great during the break in period but I never beat on it during that time, after the break in I started revving it higher (never beyond factory rev limit) and wot pulls. One day the pressure seemed lower on the gauge and decided to shim the pump but it was to late it developed a light knock (#3 rod) before I even made it home. Tore it down trying to find answers, come to find out the pump was just over the max clearances listed in the service manual. Guess its my own fault for not checking it and cutting corners with the parts. But on to bigger and better:waytogo:

What's that? Checking the pump clearances? My guess is that the wide clearances allowed a low volume/pressure condition that was exploited in the higher rpm ranges.

    Agreed.

I'm not an engine builder by any means, so that problem is one I've never thought of.
