This sound started happening about a week ago and I am really concerned. It only happpens when revved at a certain point. it will go away at idle and other RPM's but will come back. I will speed up to about 75MPH and then let go of the gas or coast and the sound will be there. step on the gas and it goes away. here is the link to a video of the sound. motor sound - YouTube Thanks for all your help
My guess because I had the same issue. Broken chain guide. Pop the valve cover and look at the right side timing guide.
So today i was gonna do an oil change but on my way home the sound went away then got worse. my oil light came on and it stalled out. I proceeded to get the oil change but the oil was at a good level. I think the 22re is giving up on me
Look at the oil you drained out..or did you do the change? If not drain it and look for bearing debris
Most likely the oil pump. I am gonna do a rebuild. well I am gonna get it done by a shop. I am gonna clean the throttle body and intake manifold since I know they are all gunked up. I am gonna remove the engine and bring that down to the shop instead of having them remove it. that should free up some labor costs I didn't change or drain the oil but I will once I start to remove the engine.
man i hate to revive an old thread.... but did you ever find out what it was? mine recently started making the same sound.... if at idle or heavy throttle (load) no noise, but when i lift to shift or light throttle cruising it rattles just like that....valves adjusted already , new timing chain/metal guides from engnbldr as well as new oil pump/water pump/timing cover (the other one was not chewed through i just did it since it was in the kit ) .....was it the oil pump? or wrist pin or rod bearing? i would think any wrist pin/bearing would be noticible at any load not just light load/throttle.....any way to check the oil pump?
I have a very similar noise as well...It didn't do it when I got it in July, but recently I've noticed it but only if I start driving when the motor is still cold. Same as you describe, when you let off the throttle to shift it will rattle loudly. Or if you go through a gear and then use very light throttle it gets loud. I've had the valve cover off 3 times hoping it was loose rockers but they are all in spec. I also have a new timing cover/chain/guides, so I know that's good. I would love to know what it is. I'm wondering if my rocker shafts are getting worn, or what else it could be I don't know. I just let it warm up some before I drive
mine does it even warm.... i'm wondering wrist pin? but why only under light/no load? if the rocker shafts were worn there would be axial play in the rockers on the shaft right? i did not feel any on mine....any 22re guru's out there with some insight?
honestly, it sounds like a rod knock. maybe bearings are wearing out. try drain the oil and look carefully for ANY signs of metal (shavings or flakes) -any small sign is a sign. and when u drain the oil, try and use a heavier weight. if the noise lessens or goes away, there it is. ---however, using heavier oil on a cold start will probably induce more of the noise due to the thicker oil. but will/should thin out in viscosity somewhat when engine is warm. hope this helps. its what i would try. its simple. and its just an oil change. my truck has 220k+ miles, original bottom end. i run a 5w-30. no noise
yep. bearings...dropped the pan and rods 2 and 3 had some play...dropped the caps and they are to copper.... also noticed coolant dribbling down #4 piston wall.... that would explain why i was losing coolant but none in oil. headgasket to combustion.... slapped new bearings in and replacing HG hopefully get a few more thousand out of it while i rebuild the spare. thanks all
nice. well not really but, u get what i mean. good u caught it in time before any major damage. on the coolant.... thats what mine was doing - slowly loosing coolant but no signs externally. till i finally just blew the **** out of the HG. i made the mistake of usinga cheap HG - blew that in less than 2 yrs. learned my lesson. went back in and replaced it with a OEM Toyota HG.
ya. well its 18* outside and snow flurries. but gotta work on it tonight after work..... worked on it last night and one of the head bolts broke off on me.... cant get the head off the seal has broken but its hung up on the remainder of the head bolt shaft...out of the 10 head bolts 8 were covered in oil and 2 were covered in carbon build up....the one that broke is covered in carbon build up and the hole is so caked that it is sticking to the bolt shaft damnit.....any ideas?
