    As the title says...

What weight/brand of motor oil are you using. I have over 300,xxx miles on my 77 and it burns oil and coolant like no other... I am currently using 20W-50, should I be using 10W-30 and some Lucas stabilizer instead, Cold starts (mornings are only around 50F degrees outside) are a bitch to get running... Miles plus too thick oil maybe my culprit?

    What is everyone running?

I'm running 10w-30 in my '77. I don't care what brand as long as it's not the cheap stuff. I have almost 200,000 miles and don't burn much if any.

I usually run Castrol or penzoil. Fram filters usually. 10-30 oil. Old motors I run 20-50. It keeps the pressure up and doesn't seep past bad valve guides and piston rings as easily.

Castrol GTX in all my cars except for my IS300 which I recently switched over to Mobil1 because I only change the oil twice a year.

I use manufacturer's recommended viscosity: 20W-50 in my old cars and 5W-30 in the newer ones.

dont really know why people run 20-50 in these motors as small as some of the oil passages are. my guess for the cold start issue is a stretched timing chain, and the tensioner is having a hard time taking out slack when the oil is cold. I run Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 with a motorcraft oil filter in everything.

any of my stuff that burns oil i usually run 10w-30 in the summer with 1 litre of 20w-50 mixed in. my Silverado burns oil kinda bad and adding a litre slows it down alot

I've been running 10-30 full synthetic for the last 7 years or so. Runs just fine, and I don't have to worry about going over on mileage between changes. I don't have a preferred brand, just whatever is on sale that week.

I noticed a huge change from just super tech or whatever's on sale 10w-40 to valvoline max life. My 87 went from burning a quart every 800 to a quart every 2500 or so

Straight 30w HD is all I've ever ran in everything from old worn American v8s to magnesium air-cooled VWs. ****s cheap and seems to do the job.

Anything but pennzoil in either 10/40 or 15/40 if I'm changing it at work since we have barrels of delo 400 and a big WIX filter never, EVER a fram, they are absolute shiat.

Apologies for the necromancing of this old thread, but I am curious as to what oil and filter would be appropriate to run for future reference (will have to re-check the manual for the specifications tomorrow.) Tomorrow I will be doing an oil change since it looks pretty black; The oil and filter I will be using is STP High Mileage SAE 5W-30 with a 90915-YZZG2 filter.

Did the oil change with my specified oil, the previous oil was as black as night!!! Much more relieved I did it now :waytogo: Doing it was so easy on this truck its amazing! Aside the sideways filter and me spilling about half the oil I put into the filter, it went smoothly!

Mobil 1 in everything. 15-50 oil, 75-85 in trans and 75-140 in rear axle. Fram for filter. I log extreme mileage(600 miles in 1 day) on many cross country road trips. Found engine and drivetrain ran much better with synthetic lube. You don’t get the viscosity breakdown like you do with Dino oil. The cost difference between the two is minor.
