lol i had to think about that for a sec. I'm guessing it'll "settle" in? Not sure if i want to start assembling the carpet and seats again until i know for sure. Ugh. It's so HOOOOOOT. Milk was a bad choice.

If its not coming back to center it may just be missing some small springs.

UPDATE: Shifter is working fine now. I guess it just had to break in. There is a little more transmission noise than normal, but can only be heard with the stereo off and windows rolled up. The throws between 3,4,5, and reverse are really noticeable and the overall feel exudes precision. It's a joy to row the gears :).

On mine I had to modify the ball ( a faction too large), & the noise ,yes, you will have to live with.
I tried a rubber sleeve over the lower portion of the shaft, helped a little!

i loved my lce shifter when i drove my truck......... that, mated with the 9lb. flywheel made it tremendous fun you would not believe

as for the noise, i remember reading somewhere a slight solution although i never cared or heard much of it to try it..... if you can find a way to attach or clamp a well made lead or very solid dense steel to the base around the neck, it will absorb some of the resonating vibration going through the shifter. this lead weight can go under the shifter boot and be covered. just an idea.....
