Hey all. The 4spd in my 76 longbed is toast and I found a deal on a newer(89-95) 5spd. Before I get too far into this I would like to know if this is feasible without having to get a new driveshaft and all that. And if its not which transmission would be the easiest to put in. Thanks in advanced!
the transmission + bellhousing length of the old tranny should be different than that of the new tranny + bellhousing. You will need to have the length of your driveshaft adjusted. Many shops should be able to do this for around $100. Also its highly unlikely the old bellhousing will work with the new transmission, so make sure you get that, too. You should also find out if the new transmission is for cable driven speedo (like you have)
Doesn't the '76 have a W40 in it, and the 89-95 should be a W50? Wouldn't that be a pretty straight forward swap?
The W50 stopped being the toyota pickup 5-speed somewhere around '83, and was replaced by the W55 (and then the W57, 59, etc) The bellhousing for the w40/50 won't work with the W55/56/57/58/59 transmissions, as it is a different length. The bell for the W55+ is interchangable among the W55+ models, last I checked.
