I don't have any experience myself... but I do commonly read stories of someone buying and owning a stolen car for many years because of a vin swap, until the day it's discovered and it has to be given back..

I mean in Cali specifically some guy owned the original vehicle from the Pulp Fiction movie that had been stolen shortly after the movie released, and never knew it was stolen because the vin was switched. He had the car for almost 20 years with out problems.. then one day the cops knocked on his door because they found the abandoned clunker with the matching numbers..

So I think as long as the cab you get has a clean record and you just swap the vins, you shouldn't have an issue.. if anything just keep some pictures on your phone and explain yourself in the very unlikely event that a cop gave you ****.

Don't swap vins!! You can go to jail for this!! Your local chp office can re vin your vehicle with all the proper documentation on both vehicles. Go to your local chp office and they will explain how to properly change cabs. If I'm not mistaken you will have to register the truck under salvaged title after this though.
