For awhile now I been thinking about doing a diesel swap to my 77, has anyone else done or thought about doing one??? My truck isn't a daily driver it's more just a toy to play with. I would like to shove a 4bt or even a 6bt in it, I've seen tons of people do it do the lifted toyota but yet have seen anyone do it to a lower mini. The biggest issue would be the oil pan sent they are so big and weight would be the next problem. Here before to long the front suspension will be out of a c4 corvette the back half is almost done with the Dana 44 c4 irs... So what would you guys think on a diesel swap???
I have been thinking of doing a swap myself. My buddy is putting in a VW turbo diesel in his but it is slow going. This place makes kit/adapters to drop a VW diesel into a toyota. ACME ADAPTERS - Store: Engine Kits
I've always wanted to do a TDI swap it seams more logical and there are tons of aftermarket stuff for them. A 4BT is too tall in a 2wd that's why they only do them in the 4x4s. But would be sweet none the less.
Yeah I thought about an tdi also but more after rolling coal out from underneath it.my buddy has a tdi he make around 250 hp and 3 something tq witch is pretty impressive
Doing one in my 91. Im using the om617a from mercedes. Motor is a little long since its a 5 cyl. Not alot of performance upgrades for them but theyre durable an long lasting. They get good mpg and all mechanical and no wiring hassle like the tdi. 4bt are cool but theyre expensive to get ahold of
Those om617 are to come by out here. I've tried for a few months to hunt one down that was simi descent but no luck what so ever. Yeah the Cummins definitely hold the values, I found a few earlier 90s for around 1500 bucks but they needed work :-/
I looked at it, I am not seeing the cost/benefit over the 22r. This is just opinion, but the way I see it is: Cost: $3000 plus for engine and associated systems More $$$ for fuel at the end state Benefit: Slightly increased power/torque Slightly improved mileage For me, this adds out as a negative number
The TDI averages 45+ for fuel milage. More power and milage. I can get a crate ready to run TDI for 1500 bucks. When I can afford the swap I'm gonna do it. But I'm also thinking of a supercharged LS1 as well.
The TDI gets 45MPG pushing a slick little sedan through the air, not a picnic table. With the increased Cg of a truck, you can likely drop that down to 35, and I am getting 30 from my 22R. At $5.00 per gal (which is will be in the next couple of years), and averaging something like 12,000 miles per year, it will take you ten years or so before you start making money on fuel (assuming $3000 total for the swap), and this also assumes the same price for gasoline and diesel, which it isn't. 1500 for the engine is a nice start, but it isn't exactly "bolts right in", so likely budget another $1000/1500. To each his own brother, I did the same things a long time ago. Best of luck.
Yea ya got a point there. But I think if anyone was to do it, it wound be mainly for the cool factor. Get some heads turning.
thats why its an hobby, anyone that does mods or swap motor for bigger and better are not going for mpgs. they are going for the cool factor and want to show off their skills, if people on here are going for mpgs they wouldnt of gone with an old school yota they would of gone with a newer more efficient toyota,
I have about 1500$ in my swap as of right now. Still need a radiator and oil lines. I did the work myself except I had someone build the adapter plate and pilot bearing adapter and motor mounts. I found 2 motors for 500 the adapter was about 750 or so. Or I could have bought a rebuilt 22re for 1000$. Plus I wanted the cool factor of having a bodied toyota diesel
Stock toyota 5spd. With a 3/4" aluminum plate. Adapter plate is bolted to motor and has the toyota bell housing pattern in it.
