It looks like I need to replace the upper and lower control arm bushings in my truck, and BAD. I know how to do the uppers, they are pretty standard, but the lowers? I'm guessing I need to totally relax the torsion rods, and the bushing actually goes over the ends at the control arm, right? Sounds like i'd have to pull the torsion rods completely out and press the bushings on? I've never done these before and honestly can't find much on the web about it.
Ok, you need to relax and remove torsion bar. Just undo the adjustment part and wiggle the bar back (its splined into a lever thats bolted to the LCA. Remove the big nut on the front of the LCA. Like a 30MM or something. Use a brass sledge to drive the threaded/splined shaft you just took the nut off of. Knock it rearwards. Its splined into the lever, goes thru the LCA and frame. With that bolt out, the LCA can be wiggled down off of the frame/bushing. See, simple. Then the bushing is driven in one way. It has a flange lip to it, so knock it out that direction. Remember the grease.
Awesome, thanks! Sounds like a little bit of work but nothing too bad. Sounds like the only thing out of the ordinary is the torsion bar, but either way a spring has to be removed, no matter what type of suspension it is. Thanks for the info!
Yea no problem. I had to use an air chisel to hammer out the old bushing. Then I used an oxy torch to cook out the remains. The uppers gave me a world of trouble. Had to air hammer and burn em out too. But with new bushings and BJ's... Ahh new car feel
Sounds... like.... fun? Yea with the way this truck's been, I wouldn't be suprised if they FELL out when I pulled the control arms. Almost everything else has, including the bumper. Took lots of WD40 and a breaker bar. Pulling the motor next weekend, so the disassembly continues.....
